More on ICT (Image Constraint Token)

Down-converting the analog signal from high-def to something closer to standard-definition would at least prevent pirates from starting with the highest-quality image. The effect, however, will be to deny those HDTV owners with analog-only sets the full capabilities of the new disc formats.

We all knew it but there it is in print.
I wonder if any studio will not downrez. I'm guessing no.

The only Studio confirmed to be against using ICT is Fox. I'm willing to bet Universal will also opt not to use it. Sony and Disney seem split on it though both have made comments in the past that they don't want to screw over older HDTV owners. I don't believe we've heard anything from Paramount on the subject. Sadly, W-B seems dead set on using it.

Thanks for the confirmation of that.

I guess this flag won't last long since eventually the whole encryption scheme will be broken.

But it surely won't be long for a hackable player that ignores the flag.

Cool. We'll be getting high-def over component.

What's really amazing is the studios thinking that pirates actually sit around and say, "crap, I wish we could get output over analog... if only that flag wasn't there, we could copy this." Sheeesh.

So with this just now being announced as a hardware requirement does that mean that all of the first generation players will have it or does it mean that us analog HDTV owners should snatch up a certain first generation player while we still can?

As I understand it, all players must be equiped to handle ICT flags, including first generation players. If DVD is any indication, their will be hackable players to ignore the flags in a few years.
