HD DVD and Blu-ray FAQ

Re: HD DVD and Blu-ray FAQ
I didn't think that Blu-ray and HD discs were divided into regions like DVD discs. But according to this Amazon page they are: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=3193231
Does this mean that Region 2 Blu-ray discs run at a slightly faster speed than Region 1? The way DVDs do.

Blu-ray has letters like A B and C.
PAL is no longer an issue unless the special features are produced in SD and even then its only sometimes.

Re: HD DVD and Blu-ray FAQ
Can the movie on a professional Blu-ray disc that you buy, be in either 1080p, 1080i, or 720p resolution? Or are the discs always 1080p?
I have never seen information about this in reviews or product details.

Re: HD DVD and Blu-ray FAQ
It can be 1080p or 1080i. I'd say 99% of titles are 1080p with some exceptions (Short Circuit, South Park Season 12 and some budget titles come to mind). Any major Day and Date will be 1080p. I've never heard of a 720p Blu-ray film (does not mean they don't exist of course).

I believe some porn titles are 720p.
BTW, the FAQ in the first post hasn't been updated in more than 3 years. Could it be a wee bit out of date?

Re: HD DVD and Blu-ray FAQ
Hi guys.
Have a question with how BD-Live works, do the extras you download off it go onto the disc itself or onto the HDD of your player.
I'm a little lost on this so I hope you might be able to help.

Having issues!
I have a BDP-S350. I've played many a 4:3 DVD -- not stretched or zoomed in -- but pillarboxed, the way they should be shown.
I put in my WB release of the Chaplin Revue, and the damn thing keeps ZOOMING in. I've fiddled around with ALL my settings and it doesn't seem to change a thing. I've played the same DVD on several DVD players and they all display the image correctly.
Is it possible that the encoding of the disc conflicts with the blu-ray player?
ADDITION: I've now played around with other discs from the WB/Mk2 collection, and they all seem to do the same thing. Hmmm.

Maybe it's encoded to fit whatever screen it is on like the widescreen dvds sometimes did ... crap, I don't remember what it was called...

I have that player but not the mentioned discs- make sure you have the player set on "Fixed" aspect ratio- it seems the opposite of what it should be, but that's the setting it should be on. I've never seen it zoom a standard DVD, just stretch it if it's on the other setting.
Back to questions- I have a Toshiba A3 HD-DVD player, a Pioneer audio receiver that decodes every format currently available, and the only HD-DVD title I know of that had DTS 7.1 audio, Pan's Labyrinth. I can't get it to play in full 7.1 on my system, just 5.1 with matrix-decoded rear-surrounds. My player can only output sound in multichannel PCM, not the DTS or Dolby bitstream. Is there any way I can play this disc in 7.1, would I need another HD-DVD player, or am I just out of luck?
I have a similar problem with my Sony Blu-Ray, as it can only send out DTS 7.1 through PCM as a 5.1 downmix. Switching the player to Bitstream will get the DTS 7.1 signal to the receiver which is all well and good, but I have to switch it back to PCM to hear any 'interactive' audio, thankfully I haven't come across any discs where I would need both enabled at the same time but it's still a pain.
