It annoys me to no end when someone quotes me in their reply, but they misquote me by changing the text attributed to me in their reply.

Does this bother other people here on DVDTalk?

Are you talking about a misquote and then an attack based on it? That would certainly be terrible.

Or do you mean a changed quote as a clearly labelled joke?

I agree with Patman. Like if I said in a thread: "I'm going to kick your ass!" and some one quotes me, but changes it to "I'm going to kiss your ass!". It's happening alot more. Sometimes it's funny, but not all the time.

I don't have much of a problem with it, because in every instance I've seen, it's been obvious that someone has changed your quote. Additionally, of course, what you wrote originally is written in stone above it - the record is preserved.

If it ever gets to the point where people are putting genuinely offensive words in other people's mouths (er, fingers), and it's not very clear from their post that they've made a change, then my stance on this would change.

Just my $0.01...

Alot of people fail when trying to be funny. Did you see Fishdude's Answer Fishdude thread? Whooo, talk about falling flat.

Blame the replier not the tool they use to reply. GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE.

I think Patman is talking about actually changing the quote, Fishdude's thread didn't go anywhere, but he didn't misquote people.

For example, joltaddict didn't give the above quote, of course (sorry joltaddict, just misquoted you as an example).

Is misquoting people a problem?

When people misquote, they're just trying to be funny. I think joltaddict was just saying that too often when people try to be funny, they're not funny, and he gave Fishdude's thread as an example. The illustration would have worked better if he gave a misquote as an example, but I think his only point was:

Anyway, back to Patman's concern, sometimes it can be a problem (like in discussions about serious matters). But most of the time, the misquoters have made it obvious. And sometimes, they're even funny.

Mental note - misquote Patman whenever possible.

I was trying to say that some posters think that mis-quoting is funny in and of itself. Fishdude's thread was a great concept , all those Ask _____ threads are just begging for a parody thread. But he took the concept and just questioned the answers at face value, a bit of a disapointment. I didn't come to feedback and start a "Stop Parody Threads" topic just because one fell flat.

Not all of us are as witty as TheyCallHimJim.

Well, watch my posting frequency dwindle then. Why should I accept aggressive mis-quotes as the status quo here. It's more than juvenile and ruins the fun for me. I don't feel welcomed here anymore.

You never answered my questions. I'm still curious to understand what the problem is Pat.

Something in between. I want my words to stand as my words, and feel that when I get misquoted and have something else (objectionable) attributed to me demeans my participation here. It may be a gray area to some, but any intentional mis-quote harms the person being mis-quoted because on a forum, you are your words.

Just imagine someone twisting your sentences, replacing an odd noun or verb here and there, just enough to make you sound like an idiot, or a juvenile surfing the internet for the 1st time. I don't think it's incumbent on the readers of this forum to have to cross-check each and every "quote" to make sure something's followup to a quote has not been mis-quoted. Joke or no joke. I don't appreciate it.

Dude, if that were a crime, this place would become a ghost town.

If this crosses the line into an attack then e-mail a mod and we'll take care of it.

If it's just sillyness then point out that your post was misquoted... should take the wind out of anyones mis-post.
