Same Time Every Year

I was surprised to see a hardcore porn title in the rotation of DVD images at the top of the page. I thought that was against policy. Even though Amazon sells it, an ad for a film with money shots is far beyond what forum members expect to see on their screen.

It would be nice if we could hide that entire frame.

Re: Same Time Every Year

1. Are they appearing on any particular forums/pages?

2. Can you screenshot if you see it again?

3. Are we talking about the "DVD Reviews" and "HD Reviews" dvd cover photos w links?

Yes.

I think the supposed hypocrisy factor is what offends most members, not the actual miniscule cover pictures, because members aren't allowed to post nude pictures here anymore since the Adult Forum left.

Someone had already set the Same Time Every Year cover to be excluded from the rotation. I just disabled the cover for Infidelity: Sex Stories 2.

Not me, and I started the thread. DT was blocked at work in the past because of adult content. It's currently not blocked, and I'd rather that it didn't get blocked again. Ads for hardcore movies increase the likelihood of blockage.

Re: Same Time Every Year

I have tech looking into this, in case there's a systematic way to handle it.

But no, these covers should not be appearing on DVDTalk.

There's a field in the review CMS called "Image in Ad Rotation?" that controls it. It defaults to "yes".

It's not real-time, though; the JavaScript files are compiled nightly at 1:45 AM system time. I used to have it more regularly, but all the review cronjobs on the system were wiped out in November, so I'm trying to trigger them remotely now. It'd be pretty easy to make it run however frequently it needs to.

Edited to add -- should be every 5 minutes rather than nightly.

Are admins paid? Curious, since you seem to have a bad attitude for someone "in charge" that is donating their time to our community.

Is reality considered "a bad attitude"?

We just had a thread in Other talking about people's posts in XCritic and the Adult Forum when it was here and how they miss it. People didn't object to those covers being advertised then, but since the Adult Forum is gone we've had numerous posts and threads in this forum pointing out the hypocrisy of our not allowing the posting of nude pictures when there are suggestive DVD covers showing on the review rotation. Hypocrisy has historically been the ultimate sin on this forum so it's just a little more than difficult to take most of those complaints as people being seriously offended.

Nick Danger had a legitimate issue since his work blocked pages where the ad appeared, and that's reasonable. Are other people really offended by the DVD cover or is it something else that they're expressing?

Re: Same Time Every Year

I, for one, am offended and would prefer no adult content on the forum, there are plenty of other places for that. Getting this site blocked at work would really piss me off.

Do we still need the link to "adult dvd reviews" top center on EVERY page on the forum? How long is that contracted to be? I'm surprised more work filters don't block the site because of that prominent and persistent link.

Fair enough, and I appreciate the response. For me, it's the fact that I enjoy this site while working that makes those covers worrisome. I've been around a long time though so I get it. I don't recall those types of covers being visible outside the Adult Forum which is why I didn't visit that portion of the site from work previously. Now they're visible in every forum. If that is me being a hypocrite so be it.

I can discuss this with IB and see if there's a better way to better prevent adult-type content from appearing at least in the review rotation. It seems that it sneaks by every once in a while and needs to be manually removed. I think the "Adult DVD Reviews" might be something contractually required with Geoff, but I'll check.

Thanks X. If those are still contractually required, that's a long ass contract.

Yeah, I know. Either that, or a lack of tech support to remove it (like the Iron Weed Film Club logo by the Political Film Forum.) I'll ask.

Re: Same Time Every Year

Another issue with these types of ads is just them being on your screen whether at home or at work. Similar pictures would be put under the NSFW tag. Or it would be easy to avoid particular threads because the titles suggest they might contain pictures considered inappropriate for co-workers or family members to see.

Is it simply reality? Or is it the sort of generalization that would get someone scolded in the Political Forum? People do miss the Adult Forum, but I think everyone recognizes that the Powers That Be broke something cool, and it's not ever coming back. The tone of the thread has changed from a few years ago, when people asked for the return of the forum. Now it's just nostalgia.

Re: Same Time Every Year

RE: the occasional adult title in the rotation, that's a manual setting that someone entering titles needs to set. If it's done wrong, they can appear in the rotation until they're flagged and taken down.

As to the Adult Reviews header, I'll see if we can contractually take it down. Tech is not the issue there.

Thanks all,

Paul
