I understand having a little note at the bottom if a member has edited one of their posts, but could we possibly have more than 30 seconds (or whatever it is) to edit our posts? At least for me personally, I hate the look of an edited post - they just seem sloppy - and I'm always scrambling if I forget to bold a film title or have to correct a misspelled word before the extremely brief time window closes. Could the time limit be changed to say, 5 minutes, or even longer? On other forums I've visited, the time frame for editing posts without notation (if that's the right word) is much longer than it is here.

I would agree a little longer time frame would be helpful, even if it were just a couple of minutes.

I think if someone wants to edit a post after-the-fact, they should have every right to, and who really gives a shit about "juicy stuff that is quickly edited", if the author either didn't want or didn't intend for you to see it? Or if they regretted it? I mean....my life is a bit more important than that (he said as he typed his opinion one more time on the internet).

No one ever said they shouldn't be able to. I agree with the OP. I was simply making a side comment that it's nice to see people's first drafts.

Personally I've no idea whether those particular board parameters can be changed so, unless and until IB action your request, the options that I can see are as follows:

1. Take a lot more care with your posts, or
2. Overcome your hatred of the evidence of your own carelessness, or
3. Keep your nose clean, put in the hours and in a few more years you could be a mod, then an admin and so inherit the ability to carry out invisible edits!

Years back, under the old board software you could change the font colo(u)r at the end of your post and "hide" the edit notice. That is no longer possible. How do I know this? I, too, was once a "careless" and "vain" regular poster

Kevin you bolder the wrong part. We want to be able to edit indefinitely, the last paragraph of your post addresses the "last edited by" part.

I think it should be no more than 5 minutes though.

Bad analogy maybe but why not: It's like if George Lucas wants to edit one of his movies. Sure, they are "his" I guess, feel free to edit them, but he should tell us that it's changed from what we originally saw.

Yeah you did. Here on DVDTalk we can edit posts for as long as we want (as long as the thread is not closed). It will post a note at the bottom saying we edited the message, but we can edit them nonetheless.

Is what you should have bolded. As someone who has run a vB forum before I can say that admins used to be able to change the time amount before the message appears, but I'm not sure that the newer versions allow it (they likely do).

Gotcha, I didn't get that from the other posts in the thread. I thought it was just about the time limit on editing the post at all.

I'm a little crazy myself when it comes to the edited message at the bottom of my posts. I like to correct my typo's and a lot of times I will go back and reword stuff. Many times I have edited a post and got the edited post message, so I copied the body of the post and then deleted it and reposted just so I would have a "clean" post.

I have a question. Is it possible to allow the poster to correct his/her thread title should they make a typo? The thread seems to allow you to make maybe 1 or 2 quick corrections before the thread title is locked. I also noticed that as soon as someone makes a post into your thread, you are no longer able to edit it either and will need a moderator to fix it. I know casual posters probably won't care, but more frequent posters will probably want to fix their mistake without having to e-mail or bug a moderator. If this is strictly a moderator function, then that's fine. I just want to know if it's feasible. I'm sure there are posters here who have put wrong dates on TV episode/movie/DVD/BR thread titles or even misspelled a movie title and would love to fix their mistake on their own.

IIRC, when extended title-editing briefly was allowed there was a spate of subject titles along the lines of "Post here if you're liberal" which later changed to "Post here if you're a baby-killer" - not verbatim but you get my gist.

Based on what you described, benedict, I can see where you don't want to give folks too much freedom. There will always be folks trying to abuse it.

But if what DJariya indicated is true, this isn't necessarily an issue since it was stated that once a person posts in a thread that it automatically locks the thread title and it can't be changed.
