The ads on this site are really annoying

In particular the ads by google ones on the right side of a post that either block or cover the text in a thread. Fix it please.

Ads in posts? Aren't those the ads the only appear when you're NOT logged in?

Why was my post deleted, its it against the rules on this site to mention Firefox Add-ons? A quick courtesy pm would have been nice letting me know.

If you actually read the site's terms and conditions, you'd know why it was deleted.

This issue mainly occurs with Chrome and Firefox - I've never seen the issue with IE.

Re: The ads on this site are really annoying

The list of our rules is being revised and isn't accessible right now. The rule we have been operating under for at least the last 5 years is...

DVD Talk Membership is not free, the membership fee (which is thirty dollars per year) is paid on your behalf by the advertisers on this site. As such you agree not to use any ad blocking or suppression software or be liable for your membership fee.
So komsik, if you want to keep pushing that ad blocking software, do you want to pay the $30 membership fee, or do you want to believe people when they say you shouldn't be posting methods to block ads on this site?

Re: The ads on this site are really annoying

Thanks for pointing that out and answering my question, for the record I wasn't "pushing the software". I didn't even post a link or even a method as how to install it. Its not my software, I didn't download it 46,554,266 times. I'll also say again that I am not disrespecting you, the other poster, or the sites rules I just asked why my post was deleted since I wasn't given any explanation and you just said yourself that list of rules is not accessible now. I haven't been here since 1987 so I am not yet familiar with every unwritten rule from the past.

It should be a pretty good indication that once a post solely containing the name of the ad blocking software is deleted and a member tells you that it was against the forum's terms and condtions, that posting it again, even if it's in a spoiler tag, isn't a good idea.

I would have saved you the trouble and edited the original post myself if someone told me specifically not to discuss that software here. I wasn't aware but you don't have to worry I won't mention it again on this site

does it really cost $30 per person to run this site? This is not a criticism, i'm just curious as to what the cost of running a site like this is.

also, i'm not using any ad blocking software, and i don't see any ads. is this because of the premium membership?

I would have thought that the only people who could comment on a question like this with any authority would be the past or present owners.

That said, I can't see why the standard fee necessarily should reflect running costs or the value of lost ad revenue or whatever.

Ultimately it remains a personal decision whether visiting the site and complying with the rules is worth the sight of a few ads.

My own perspective is that I rarely find the ads intrusive and, before premium membership came in, don't recall knowingly using any ad-blocking software here. For that matter, I don't think I'm blocking anything now!

Well, since you're not sure, maybe you'd best hand over the $30 now. You know, to err on the side of caution and provide a good example to us mere members.

Has anyone ever paid this $30? I remember reading the "membership fee paid for by the advertisers" thing when I signed up. I thought - well that's a notional $30 they have paid - why not make it a notional $300 or $3000 if they want to scare people into not blocking ads. Or is there some other reason why this has to be a "paid membership" site?

For the record I'm logged in with IE and no ad-blocking stuff, and I don't see the ads the OP is referring to.

My understanding is that Geoff and subsequently IB accepted that the value of the moderating duties undertaken by members of the team at least equals the nominal or actual cost of membership. Consequently, this leaves me free to remain in blissful ignorance regarding what software my employer may or may not place between my desktop and the interwebs.

The basic point that has been made at various times in threads such as this one is that "free" use of the site is predicated on leaving the ads visible. Whether or not people choose to adhere to this stricture is another issue; albeit a related one. Anything else is pretty much a red herring, IMNSHO.
