I'm pretty sure those people are paying to have an avatar also. You probably have to be a super-premium member (or a mod) to pick other people's avatars.

I'm curious as to how this defeats the purpose of using avatars? Did someone force you to switch? Seems if you are still able to 'express your individuality unhindered,' then the avatar system works! And the terrorists have won! I have a star on my belly!
