Premium memberships?

What the hell is this crap?

Th0r S1mpson 10-23-08 03:22 PM

Tantalizing.

The Bus 10-23-08 03:42 PM

This is a premium post! <a href="http://forum.dvdtalk.com/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_usage#faq_premium_memberships"><img src="http://forum.dvdtalk.com/images/premium-members.jpg"></a>

bunkaroo 10-23-08 03:50 PM

I'm going to guess pay to have an avatar.

Fuck that!

slop101 10-23-08 04:06 PM

If the money was going to someone like Geoff, I'd consider it. But since it'll go to some giant, faceless, corporate conglomerate instead, I say fuck that indeed.

Groucho 10-23-08 04:07 PM

IB may not have a Face, but it does have a Dick!

lordwow 10-23-08 04:25 PM

Pass!

mkdevo 10-23-08 04:36 PM

so you have to pay to get that uncomfortable icon next to your name? no thanks.

The Bus 10-23-08 04:41 PM

mkdevo, it's totally worth it.<img src="http://forum.dvdtalk.com/images/premium-members.jpg"> It lets other members know who's really "in" nowadays. <img src="http://forum.dvdtalk.com/images/premium-members.jpg">

Hint: It's you!<img src="http://forum.dvdtalk.com/images/premium-members.jpg">

Th0r S1mpson 10-23-08 04:46 PM

I was a big proponent of an ad-free paid membership for a number of years, but it was more about supporting the site (and Geoff) back then than anything. Not sure how I'll feel about it today. I guess I'll wait to see what "features" the membership brings along with it.

fumanstan 10-23-08 04:56 PM

I might be interested depending on the price and the added features. I don't mind supporting DVDTalk, even via Internet Brands. Still better then XCritic :)

dick_grayson 10-23-08 05:05 PM

what "added features" could possibly make it worth paying for?

Th0r S1mpson 10-23-08 05:32 PM

If you can simply upload pictures on the forum instead of hosting yourself, it would be a big plus. And no ads.

Maybe a "post a message so anyone but ___________ can view" ;)

I can't view Thor's post -- what did he say?

He said that if you could read his post, he would front your premium membership.

Better luck next time.

The Cow 10-23-08 07:49 PM

When Geoff was running it, I would have paid without giving it a second thought.

I would not pay to support this site under IB.

Gizmo 10-23-08 08:59 PM

Like others have said, if this was Geoff id be all over this.

....But I'm a sucker and I want that shiny DVD icon next to my name really bad. Where do I hand my credit over?

Numanoid 10-23-08 10:09 PM

I'll start the bidding at $2.50 a year.

Gizmo 10-23-08 10:30 PM

I'll raise to $3

wishbone 10-23-08 10:46 PM

$3.01

Cardsfan111 10-23-08 10:48 PM

And to quote the legendary Bob Barker: "I'm sorry, but you've all overbid!"

Rockmjd23 10-23-08 11:03 PM

Only if I can have the Frontier(s) ad permanently displayed!

mndtrp 10-23-08 11:11 PM

If it would keep my posts from being marked read before I have a chance to actually read them, I would probably donate.

Th0r S1mpson 10-23-08 11:34 PM

<img src="http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll64/yesyesyes111/f.gif" align=right>As long as I can turn off the avatars people buy I'll be okay with it.

NoirFan 10-24-08 12:14 AM

I would hope that anyone paying actual money for an avatar would feel appropriately embarrassed about it.

For some reason, https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/191690/x.png reminds me of:

benedict 10-24-08 04:45 AM

I am certain that the DVD icon is intended as a temporary identifier to be replaced by something a little more classy.

Doubtless the full feature set and pricing plan will be advertised here in due course.

And, rather than using this as another opportunity to slam IB (or back-handedly Geoff or his new site), I would hope that there is some room for constructive criticism as to the specifics as and when they become known. In fact, I'm going to come out and say it: please keep things civil.

From the limited information that I hold, and which may be in state of flux hence my reticence to spill any beans, I believe that premium membership is likely to bring on stream features that have been discussed here in the past - plus maybe some new ones - and comprise a voluntary method by which interested members can contribute towards enhancing their experience of the site i.e. so far as I am aware, all existing free features will remain available to members and it will be a personal decision as to whether folk want to shell out for the additions that will soon be on offer.

I do as well. Can't stand them. Just making sure I'll also be able to turn off people's more expensive avatars. ;)

Numanoid 10-24-08 11:05 AM

I'll only go premium if Thor can't block my avatar.

Josh-da-man 10-24-08 11:43 AM

This is the only board I visit that doesn't allow avatars.

I don't know what the deal with DVDTalk and avatars is, but it's like trying force caffeine on a Mormon.

Groucho 10-24-08 11:52 AM

I'll only go premium if that allows me the following:

1. Unlimited Signature Size
2. The ability to put images in the signature as well.

Serious question. But aren't avatars more desired by younger people? Doesn't DVDtalk have a higher average age than most forums?

spainlinx0 10-24-08 12:51 PM

I don't know how I feel about avatars. I guess if they were available I would use one, but I would turn it off while at work anyway. I don't like having a lot of pictures on screen. It lets them know I'm not working too easily.

TheMovieman 10-24-08 12:56 PM

Love the forum and all, but I'm good with what's here...

bunkaroo 10-24-08 02:57 PM

Now if they were going to add the ability to log and track your collection like Blu-Ray.com has done, that would get my bucks.

Th0r S1mpson 10-24-08 03:39 PM

It would be awesome if you had to upgrade to Premium in order to read the letters "R,S,T,L,N, E" in people's posts. Then when you upgrade to Premium you get Vanna White!

Example:

<a href="http://forum.dvdtalk.com/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_usage#faq_premium_memberships"><img align="left" width=150 src="http://www.teddwebb.com/showcase/where_are_they_now/vanna_white-4.jpg"></a>I_ WOU_D B_ AW__OM_ IF YOU HAD _O UPGRAD_ _O P__MIUM I_ O_D__ _O __AD _H_ _______ "_,_,_,_,_,_" I_ P_OP__'_ PO___. _H__ WH__ YOU UPG_AD_ _O P__MIUM YOU G__ VA__A WHI__!

<---upgrade to Vanna Power now!

.

Numanoid 10-24-08 04:16 PM

Vanna White is like 95 years old, you perv.

wishbone 10-24-08 04:26 PM

If I upgrade to Vanna Power I want to be able to go to the shopping round like the good old days. And yes I will put my remaining money on a gift certificate which is redeemable only at Service Merchandise.
