Is there a mobile version of this forum?

Some sites have m.site name. Is there a text-only version for phones with a special URL? Thanks! :)

The answer is no. There is no "mobile" version of DVDTalk Forums. VB has the ability to add a theme that is mobile friendly, but it's not on here.

Huh?

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/archive/ind.../t-527868.html

The threads are oldest first, but the newest ones are there.

GatorDeb 03-21-08 06:53 PM

Thanks for the link! Great time-killer. Too bad it's oldest first, but it doesn't take that long to navigate to the new page. There's no way to make it newest first?

RandyC 03-24-08 12:08 PM

You can also try using Mini Opera on your mobile.

The Bus 03-24-08 01:32 PM

Looks like the "PDA" link makes it newest.

For example: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/archive/index.php/f-9.html

Just thought I'd resurrect this old thread with the same question. Is there a mobile version of this forum yet? I've got an Android phone and would love to view/respond with it when I'm on the go. I checked out Tapatalk, but don't see that DVDTalk is supported...

/\ I'm using the Android too, and the Internet browser works fine for this site. No need for a mobile version, IMO.

It does, it's just tiny. Would love something more manageable.

The latest post from IB on the topic: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/10360921-post49.html

AVSForum has a nice app. Hopefully, DVDTalk's app will be as good.

Can they incorporate ads and branding into tapatalk? If not, don't hold your breath.

Yes. As overtly stated by IB in the earlier thread to which I linked a few posts higher up here. My own final post in that other thread may also be of interest to some.

That post seems to overtly state "Installing a third-party API allows the display and manipulation of the forum content in a way that we cannot control" unless he wasn't talking about tapatalk in a thread titled tapatalk.

To me, and no offense to anyone intended, that seems like BS. The same thing can and is done to websites like this already with people using pop up blockers(which are against the rules here, last time I checked), greasemonkey, NoScript, etc.

Once information is transmitted to the outside world, people can manipulate it all day long.

benedict 03-31-11 10:43 AM

CRM114, sorry, my YES was intended to be an agreement to the "dont hold your breath" sentiment, given that IB had earlier stated that the branding issue presented a stumbling block.

Mister Peepers, I may have misread you - in which case, ignore the following - but it seems to me that there is a difference between IB being aware that the site might be served up in a manner other than what they might ideally choose and IB actively encouraging/participating in such an exercise.

Anyway, for my own part, I only log on from an "old-fashioned" PC and have to admit that the alleged delights of tablets, mobile access etc etc etc hold no attraction to me whatsoever... so I'd probably be better off leaving those more interested to chatter on the topic!

Right. I view TivoCommunity.com forum through the ForumRunner app on the iPhone and there is no branding or ads. (This is recalling the last time I used it, it may have changed.) Also, the AVSForum app (which seems to have a much higher viewership than this site) has very unobtrusive advertising and the only branding I see is the icon itself.

That's the thing. I breathe a sigh of relief when I see a thread has a "last page" link rather than trying to hit the microscopic numbers. This is the only time I visit members' profile pages or the IB privacy statement.

Possibly by choice. From the forumrunner website:

How can I make money using Forum Runner?

Forum Runner has full support for Google Adsense. You can embed Google AdSense and AdMob ads into the mobile app, which then generated revenue for your AdSense or AdMob account
So it is possible.

Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?

I posted in the other thread as well, 3 years now and "we still have we are working on it".

I am not trying to be a dick, and I am sure there are valid reasons, but three years is an awful long time to come up with a mobile version. But on the bright side phones are getting bigger, so eventually we won't need mobile versions of websites.

Other than large amounts of praise from users like me, I'm not sure. Is it against this forums terms of service or anything?

This thread has suddenly shown a lot of interest, as more of us are using devices other than a standard PC with a web browser to access the forum. I'm sure whatever solution the devs come up with will ultimately be the best, but meanwhile, I'd just like us to have at least a temporary solution so we can use the forum even more.

Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?

I only have an Android, so if I worked on anything, it would be that.

I also know of another forum where a guy worked on an app but then they banned his account due to some issues with him working on it. Not sure exactly what went down and I don't think he got very far into it.

I've actually installed Tapatalk on other forums, and to be fair it took at least five minutes or so (including the time to read instructions).

But they have to protect their brand...

IB owns vBulletin, so I don't really get their argument now that vBulletin has released a mobile version for the forum software.

Wow, I wasn't even aware of that. Really makes this whole thing even more of a head-scratcher.

Hi all,

I'll quote tech's answer on this, as he has previously posted it:

While we agree with the spirit of the application, we cannot open ourselves to the liability it presents to both branding and the platform of the site.

2.) We are currently working on a solution for forum interaction on the iPhone, and have plans to work on an Android version. The work on this actually started before this thread did, and is currently in alpha testing. Has it taken a long time? Yes. However, it's taken a long time because we want to make sure that the application is first class-- and it will be. While we apologize for the delay, we're sure that it'll be worth the wait.

Thanks,

Paul

Can I ask what year this was posted? ;)

Never mind, I found it, it was a 2010 response to a 2009 thread.

It's important to note that he posted that on 9/8/10, and it's quickly getting to the one year mark. It's ridiculous that nothing has happened since then, there is no reason to believe there is any truth to that, and that out of all the things that seems to be taboo to talk about on this forum, this is one of them. I just use Safari on my iPhone as well, but that is so stupid to have to do since there are a number of other options out there, and nothing is being done to implement any of them. Either give us a solid option for doing this, or just come out and flat out say it wont ever happen.

Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?

Snarky response. Perhaps some sort of update rather than glibly reposting what was said a LONG time ago would be in order.

ibobi 06-07-11 12:35 PM

Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?

Hi,

That was certainly not meant as snarky or glib, merely an attempt to shorthand the existing response!

Which is: no on Tapatalk (as it would compromise our management of the site), and as far as mobile apps it is something we have been looking into but there is no release imminent, so I have no real update on that.

Please let me know if there are other questions; I will keep you in the loop as much as possible, as I have been trying to do on this site.

Best,

Paul
