Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
I posted in the other thread as well, 3 years now and "we still have we are working on it".
I am not trying to be a dick, and I am sure there are valid reasons, but three years is an awful long time to come up with a mobile version. But on the bright side phones are getting bigger, so eventually we won't need mobile versions of websites. |
Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
What were to happen if someone were to make a free app for browsing the forum?

This thread has suddenly shown a lot of interest, as more of us are using devices other than a standard PC with a web browser to access the forum. I'm sure whatever solution the devs come up with will ultimately be the best, but meanwhile, I'd just like us to have at least a temporary solution so we can use the forum even more. |
Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
I only have an Android, so if I worked on anything, it would be that.
I also know of another forum where a guy worked on an app but then they banned his account due to some issues with him working on it. Not sure exactly what went down and I don't think he got very far into it. |

I've actually installed Tapatalk on other forums, and to be fair it took at least five minutes or so (including the time to read instructions).

Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
IB owns vBulletin, so I don't really get their argument now that vBulletin has released a mobile version for the forum software.

Hi all,
I'll quote tech's answer on this, as he has previously posted it:

1.) The branding of DVDTalk is something that we need to have control of. Installing a third-party API allows the display and manipulation of the forum content in a way that we cannot control. While we agree with the spirit of the application, we cannot open ourselves to the liability it presents to both branding and the platform of the site. 2.) We are currently working on a solution for forum interaction on the iPhone, and have plans to work on an Android version. The work on this actually started before this thread did, and is currently in alpha testing. Has it taken a long time? Yes. However, it's taken a long time because we want to make sure that the application is first class-- and it will be. While we apologize for the delay, we're sure that it'll be worth the wait. Paul |

Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
I'm just resigned to use my Safari browser on my iPhone to view this forum since I don't expect an app or mobile version anytime soon.

Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
Snarky response. Perhaps some sort of update rather than glibly reposting what was said a LONG time ago would be in order.

Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
Hi,
That was certainly not meant as snarky or glib, merely an attempt to shorthand the existing response! Which is: no on Tapatalk (as it would compromise our management of the site), and as far as mobile apps it is something we have been looking into but there is no release imminent, so I have no real update on that. Please let me know if there are other questions; I will keep you in the loop as much as possible, as I have been trying to do on this site. Best, Paul |
Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
Just don't feel like you have to approach us all corporate-like. Whenever I read a response from someone from IB it feels like something I'd get from Microsoft's tech support phone line. Just be straight up and casual. We just want to know what's going on. :)
I understand why IB wouldn't use Tapatalk, but what's the reason behind not using vBulletin's mobile suite? From my understanding IB also owns vBulletin, and from what I've seen the mobile extension is relatively painless to add and remove. What's the harm in letting us use that until the official DVDTalk extension is finalized? |
Re: Is there a mobile version of this forum?
Hi John,
I assure you, if there were an easy solution to the mobile issue, we'd be doing it; there's nothing preventing us from deciding to implement mobile solutions here -- it's a resource issue and not at all as simple as flipping a switch. The site would need to be upgraded to a newer version of VB, which means migrating data and user accounts and verifying everything and... that takes time and dev resources that are not available at this time. I know this is frustrating to hear. But it's where we are. For now, the mobile solution is to view the full site on your mobile device's browser. Best, Paul |
