Weren't we supposed to go 100% "family friendly"?
 

I thought I read here that we were moving towards becoming 100% work safe, with no links to adult content at all.

We still have a link to adult reviews at the top center of every single page on the site, and a few other adult mentions/redirects.

I'm not a prude, but would prefer this site to be completely work safe, and I swear that is what Geoff said we were aiming for when they created xcritic.

It was said that was happening, I don't know that a time frame was ever made publicly.

Q: How about XCritic is that part of this?
A: No, XCritic.com has be spun off as its own separate site completely separately owned and operated. Going forward Internet Brands and DVD Talk will not have any form of adult content, ads, links, or adult forum on it.

The links are not to DVD Talk they are to XCritic and will remain there. All adult content HAS been removed from DVD Talk.

So all the same content is still there, it just is hosted on a different site, so that makes DVDtalk work-safe / family friendly?

I'll let Internet Brands clarify, but directing people to content that used to be here for them on another site is essential and there aren't any other links/ads/etc here that are adult vs. what we used to have.

But...there ARE adult links here. Which is completely the opposite of what Trevor has twice quoted.

To be technical, I only quoted it once, Lunatikk was first.

I imagine that xcritic was not thriving on it's own, so it was decided to leave the links here to increase traffic.

It's their business, they want the revenue/traffic, but it is completely the opposite of what was told to us earlier.

Due to these ubiquitous links (top center of every single page), some of us are blocked at work by filters, have been verbally blocked by supervisors seeing the links, or choose to not go here at work for fear of them being seen.

Somehow, I'm guessing we won't get a further response to this.

Josh, that's true, but as stated, it does indeed go against the above quote that mentions the stuff that will no longer eb on DVD Talk, and that quote includes the word "links" as well as content and everything else. I don't really care all that much but Trevor and the guys are right and have a valid complaint.

He's made two different positions. He contradicted his initial post, and hasn't responded to being called out on said contradiction.

I guess the question is what constitutes an adult link. To IB and DVDT, it seems that the link refers to content within DVDT not outside of it.

It is a valid complaint, but let's wait and as Geoff said,

Xcritic as a website is thriving quite nicely, now linking to a variety of adult websites; even carried on adult search engines that would not do so when the adult content was at DVD Talk. My understanding of the current situation is that since so much of the content originated here, a link seemed appropriate. As previously stated, IB has promised to look into coding something to allow the SFW crowd the means to make DVD Talk safer than it has ever been for their needs without eliminating every possible adult discussion, cover, review, keyword, etc., for those that might not want such a sanitized version. I think it's fair to give them time to do so, DVD Talk is already more family friendly/SFW in recent months than ever before.

Oh, as far as G! responding immediately, he's extremely ill at the moment with a lot on his plate should he feel better. Please give him some extra time to chime in on any threads or answer emails out of common courtesy. Thanks!

DVDTalk is work safe. There is no adult content on the site. As far as links go, we agreed to support Geoff in this as long as the matter itself was not on DVDTalk which it isn't, and Geoff, himself, has made that quite clear.

DVDTalk is quite work safe, however, it is impossible to make this 100% "family friendly" since the site is not really garnered towards families, but towards movie enthusiasts.

If the "links" part is being so much of an issue, we will remove that word from there.

Edit: And when I say adult content, I specifically mean porn.

Unless I'm mistaken and the "Torture Chamber" cover is now considered "adult content" and explicit sexual acts covered with tiny dots are not permitted on the main site, it's just a lost cause to argue.

My understand is that if it's on Amazon, it's okay here. Hard to argue with that logic.

But as some other posts in that thread mentioned, you would never see that cover on Amazon unless you actively searched for it. The only site that I spend more time on during my day than DVDTalk is Amazon, and I can say that I have never seen anything like that posted on any main Amazon page. I've actually never seen anything remotely close to that posted on their public pages.

For weeks that image was unavoidable on the DVDTalk forum pages, regardless of surfing preferences or specific forum visits. I think there's a pretty clear difference, but if that's the rule, that's the rule. I still consider it beyond disingenuous to say that cover is not pornographic.

As it is to say that there is no adult content here.

The links (on every blasted page on the site) go to adult content, but because they aren't hosted here it doesn't count.

even just having the links makes the site blocked by some software, so I'm not sure how you can call it work safe

To be clear the links to XCritic will stay as they are... as they are part of the long term transition plan.

It's funny to me how desperate this site is to push XC, to the point that we now have blatant hypocrisy. (the whole "no links" post) :shrug: Oh well.

I'm not sure if this is technically possible, but what about a user option for "family friendly/work safe" that can be turned on or off (and defaults to off). it seems like this would make the most business sense, as the default would leave the site exactly as it is now, but those who decide to turn the work safe setting on will increase their traffic to the site (ie., at work for example, when currently they can't).
