I know this came up before when it came to the political forum, and I'm not sure at what length it was discussed. It seems (to me at least) that the temporary suspensions from the political forum for violating political-forum-only rules has worked.

My question is, would it be possible to consider a sub-forum-based banning for offenses that relate to a particular subforum more than the rest of the board?

Say someone is a great contributor to the Bargains forum.

Now say that same someone tends to be a stickler when it comes to hardback books. And the book forum mods are sick of them posting in every single book thread about what losers people are if they don't buy the hardback version, so a rule is made that there is no discussing hardbacks in an unrelated book thread. Then that person says hardback again.

Would it make sense to simply ban them from Book Talk: their love, their passion, their nemesis. And to allow them to continue posting in the other forums with a warning, since they may still have a lot to contribute in the absence of their hardback syndrome?

Would it be too big of a burden on the mods in general? I ask that seriously... I know the feature is there for the forum but perhaps managing it would be a nightmare. Or perhaps there are principles that would prevent thinking of the subforums on a somewhat individual basis in some cases.

I don't think this would alter the day to day operations of the mods in much of a significant way, but I admit to being a bit naive when it comes to that side of things.

Perhaps a lot of problems would indeed be easier to be rid of if a banning from a single forum were an option for the mods.

Clearly a majority of the forum rules (advertising, personal attacks, etc) are forum-wide and people who refuse to abide by these have no business in the other subforums any way. There are a lot of reasons to ban/suspend someone and most would not be affected.

But not all situations are like that, so I'm just putting this idea out there as a suggestion. I know a few people who will oppose it right off the bat, but perhaps there is a venue for the discussion of this matter where it would be considered.

We already have that system in a few forums and it has been used in a couple of cases.

If someone is banned from one of the sub-forums do you really think they will be as eager to contribute to the bargains forum? Seems to me if you want what someone has to offer you have to put up with them to get it

While we're discussing banning policies, is there anyway that a banned member could come back if they made up for whatever it is that they did wrong? Just a thought...

Not when somebody is warned several times and then finally suspended for repeatedly advertising a product here and then they just sign up again and start posting under a new username.

People shouldn't have to be baby sat on internet forums. They should be adult enough to realize that they can't post in threads about books and should stay out of them.
