I think all it takes is a thread like this every once in a while and things seem to be fine for a while after. it's a cycle and probably healthy to address the climate of the forum. I think, overall, things are pretty good.......although it will be interesting to compare now to how things are in November

Personally, I find posts that do not "elevate" the discussion to be worthwhile, as it gives opportunities to point out the absurdity of following the party line on everything.

Oh I forgot to mention the true key to keeping this forum going smoothly is to make sure we boot all the Canadians out (or is that oot?) Now there's something I think we can all agree on.

As I just pointed out in another thread I think the traffic level here has really dropped off, now maybe it's part of a cyclical thing but when looking around in other Feedback forum threads (and other threads where it is mentioned) it seems a lot of people have just stopped coming around. Is this something that is of concern or should the political forum just be for the self-selected few who want to come in and rehash the same topics over and over again? Finally is it time to just give up on it and roll it back into the main other forum (not that I have the power to do that and I don't know how the admins/Geoff feel about that... I'm just asking these questions on my own)?
Regarding the poll the last two questions are really more for when it is moved out of the Political Forum to Other or the Feedback forum. As said I wanted to get some initial impressions here first. Also if you vote for anything that has a ________ in it please fill in the blank in your post in an explicit way (copy the first part of the phrase you are responding too and then fill in the blank).

Fixing posts should be allowed. Politics have so much spin anyway, if a post was fixed, it actually might make more sense.
The Politics Forum is not for everyone. If you leave, well, ok then. Bye. It's not a popularity contest in here. I think people who say they left and are waiting for a change, can continue waiting for a change. Just because they don't like it, doesn't mean it doesn't work.
The Politics Forum will offend you. This should not be a surprise. So, we need a disclaimer that says as much. If you can't take the heat in here, then you probably need to hang out in the Book Forum.

I'm one of the people who does not really post anything here, but I genuinely enjoy coming here and watching the discussions unfold. I don't consider myself very politically savvy, mostly because I don't take the time to really pay attention to it other than this forum. I know that a lot of arguments here sometimes get caught up in name calling or snide generalizations, but when it comes down to it I don't really get to experience the kind of discourse that I see here at any other message boards, or God forbid a chat room. I wouldn't call myself a moderate as Bushdog mentioned, but similarly I am open to hearing other sides and hearing different opinions. I don't have strong stances on many issues because I don't feel I have a lot of the information or life experience to set my opinions in stone. I don't think being so staunch in your opinions is all that great a quality, but I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say.
I know some of you consider a lot of the issues the "same ol' same ol'" but some of us are still reading it, and I like that you all get me to think about a lot of topics that I may not get to hear people discuss outside of this forum. I would be sad to see this forum get merged back into other because we might lose some of the more obscure threads that wouldn't get posted or lost in the shuffle of other.
Either way I think this forum is great, and that's not hogwash.

There are political forums out there that would make DVD Talk political forum like My Little Pony Talk or Cabbage Patch Kids Talk. It's as civilize as you can get here.

My book entitled "Americans Think Like Bricks Swim" is almost finished, which explains why I don't post much anymore.
This is one of the most sedate political forums that I've ever seen. Relax and keep it as it is.

Leave it as is. I may disagree with many here but that doesn't mean I don't respect them or dislike them and I hope they feel the same way.
Anyway, It's like a Family bickering over things and we don't need anything changed around here.

I wonder what it will be like when, in 2008, the Dems have control of the House, Senate, and Hillary and Bill and both back in the White House.

I've really tapered off my political posting because most of the political threads involve obvious trolling that goes unnoticed or the same lame us vs them Dem vs Rep boring discussion.
Politics should continue as its own subforum, but unless things improve, I'll continue to keep my involvement down.

Wow. You summed up my thoughts but in a much more colorful way.
I will say this though - this is not the low point of the Politics forum. The low point was the "I need more proof" nonsense. Coincidentally, I didn't post very often in the now-defunct sub-sub War Forum.

Since I was one of the first (if not the first) to suggest a War/Political Sub-Forum...I'd say keep it. Personally, I don't want to sift through all of the "Look at What @#($#*# Did Now" threads. I come to Other to kick back and relax, and if I want to talk shop, than a visit to the sub-forum is easy.
There might be a drop off in visitors there, but how many visitors woudl skip Other if all of the political threads came back here?

I was against the creation of the Politics Forum, then ended up spending more time there than in any other DVDTalk forum. I finally left for good maybe a year ago and do not plan to return.
There were several aspects of it that drove me away, but there's no denying that the main one was this: it's home to a handful of deeply unpleasant individuals who make every thread they touch turn to shit. And they touch a lot of threads.
I suspect that even if all of them were banned (perhaps a few already have been, but definitely not all) it would be only a temporary fix. The question is essentially what the character of the forum should be. It seems clear, both from the responses in this thread and from what I remember of my several years in the forum, that many, perhaps most, want the forum to have the tenor of talk radio. Since I find talk radio off-putting, it's not surprising that I eventually got sick of seeing well-written, closely argued, informative posts dismissed with a bilious one-liner, and usually a trite one at that.
All of which is to say that although I personally have lost interest in the Politics Forum, it stems largely from my somewhat unrealistic and idealized concept of what such a forum should be like -- a view which many do not share, as evidenced by this thread. I have absolutely no problem going along with the majority view on this, as it's impossible to have a forum that is all things to all people and in any case I am perfectly happy in Other.

I used to lurk in the Politics Forum, but rarely visit there anymore. However, I would like it to stay around. There's no reason that DVD Talk should want to get rid of loud, aggressive, partisan people. The Politics Forum gives them a playspace of their own where they are less likely to piss off the gentler posters.
It's sort of like having a Chuck E Cheese forum.
