So...you DO want us to do a search, or you DON'T?

Okay, so in the DVD Bargain section, I searched the term "Friday the 13th", assuming there was already a thread on it. I knew that if I started a thread about it, someone would jump on me and say something helpful like "The search function is your friend", or "A thread on this already exists".

So I pulled up the old thread and asked a question. I was then told by a mod "Please don't pull up year old threads", and they closed the thread.

Um...Why not pull up the old thread? If it's relevant to the topic at hand (The DVD box set), what's wrong? I see it happen all the time in every forum. If it's not harming anyone, who cares.

If I do a search, I get scolded. If I don't do a search, I know that someone will call me out on it and point me to the already existing thread.

What's the OFFICIAL DVD TALK stance on this subject?

That does seem weird, especially given that Geoff is in the process of deleting old threads to improve server performance. I'd think it would help to bump threads rather than creating new ones to clutter up the database.

I can see another side. Create a fresh thread, so the old one can be deleted, and not have the DB cluttered with the old out-of-date posts.

True, but if they go that route then they should make the "search is your friend" type replies against forum rules as they're already annoying and would be even more so if the site takes that approach.

Search is disable during peak hours now to alleviate the forum slowdowns. See the slowness thread here for more on this.
