PMs?

Why can't I PM? I don't see this issue covered in the FAQ and the FAQ search function returns an error.

I'd like to know why nemein closed a thread in which no rules were broken and no personal attacks were launched but I can't do it since there is no PM function available.

What gives?

just because no rules were broken and no personal attacks doesn't mean a thread can't be closed. PM's are disabled. they always have been. it's best to put a link to the thread you refer to usually as I have no idea what thread you are talking about. If you wish to contact somebody you can click their name and for most users, there is an option to email them.

He's talking about

http://dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=424839

in which I fully explained my reasons in the final post

mod note: Ok I wasn't going to take any moderator type action in this thread because it might seem "unfair" having participated in it (and then promising to stay out of it). Having just recieved some reports on this though and seeing how things are devolving quickly I think/hope everyone would be in agreement this thread has outlived its usefulness. If anyone so chooses please feel free to start Iraq thread #2547 but EVERYONE ON BOTH SIDES PLEASE LEAVE THE RHETORIC, NAME CALLING AND GENERALIZATIONS AT THE DOOR
The "level" of the conversation was quickly degrading and there were a couple of RTPs so I decided to close it (if another mod wants to reopen it I'll leave that up to them, as I mentioned I'm trying to avoid these rehash Iraq threads). Alternatively, as mentioned people are free to start a new thread about the same topic and hopefully that one won't degrade to the point of "fixed" posts and blanket condescention back and forth.

The "level" of conversation across the entire political forum is generally far more confrontational than what was going on in that thread. Can I assume from your action that simply reporting posts I don't like will cause mods to close threads? I think the thread should have remained open. Let things follow their course. Why nanny people when no rules are being broken and the rhetoric is mild in comparison to literally hundreds of other open threads? Frankly, it seems to me that you closed it because you personally dislike my posts. If that's not the case, sorry. But that's how it looks.

Reasonable I guess. Thanks for the explanation.

Frankly if that's how it looks it sounds like it's your problem not mine. All I can say is that was not directly the reason. As I mentioned I had written off the thread but we got a couple of RTPs within a short amount of time after that so I thought it best to shut it down before it got too out of hand, if nothing else it forces people to take a breather and think before they respond again. Like I said if another mod wants to reopen it that's fine w/ me. If someone else wants to start a new thread about Iraq, that's fine w/ me.

That's a "debate" tactic that's used around here a lot. People report shit and mods close threads that shouldn't be closed. At least, that's how I see it.

Yeah, he really did. You just don't like the explanation, so instead of emailing the mod like you're supposed to or asking a general question about the status of PMs, you've not-so-cleverly couched a complaint about a mod action in a thinly veiled question about PMs so you could grandstand on the forum. At least that's how <i>I</i> see it.

And just so there's no confusion, I personally dislike your posts.

for future reference, if you have a problem with a thread closing or any moderator action, email the moderator or click the report this post button and email all the moderators for that forum. don't start a thread in feedback unless it is a general question

Understood. For the record, I was genuinely wondering why there was no PM function. Yes, I brought in the comment about the moderation of that thread and that may have been a mistake. I'll avoid making a similar one in the future.

And to das: also for the record... there are plenty of people around here who's posts I don't care. Big whoop.
