Avatars: A modest proposal

I was looking at another site where they use avatars, but with a twist ... users don't get to pick their own avatar. Instead, avatars go with titles. So all Cool New Members owuld have one avatar, all DVD Talk Gold Editions would have a different avatar, all DVD Talk Legends would have another, and so on.

Something to think about ...

Sounds a little boring since it's not contributing anything more than a member's title.

How about moderators get to pick the avatar for each member?

Moderators are different from administrators, right?

It is pretty boring (the one avatar per title thing), but it gives a quick visual way to tell who's been posting a lot and who isn't.

Why would anyone care about that?

(current titles are fine for that, if needed, IMO)

yeah, I don't see how an image can do anything but encourage people to pad more and do we really need that?

Besides that, it adds a strain for nothing more than we are already getting with our current member titles.

Yep, agree with the others.

Adds nothing to the titles other than further encouragement for padding, and thus justs wastes bandwith.

I hate avatars in general, but don't care much on this site as I can chose to not display them. But I see no need for those, I say just wait until the pay membership comes up and let paying members choose their own avatars.

Great idea, JasonF. Each avatar should be an anime character, and the higher in "rank" you get, the more brooding your avatar gets.

The good news is, this would properly reflect how 90% of the avatars would end up looking anyway.

is there an option for the average user to add an avatar or is that reserved for certain members? i went to "CP" but there is no space to hyperlink or anything. help?

I think you're on to something. Except instead of anime characters, you get a photoshopped image of skank girl, each one funnier than the last!

Sell the option to add or change your avatar for $7. Those who want to do it can, the rest don't need to.
