I'm glad someone else prefers no italics for the quoted text, but I like the gray box and regular text for the quotes. It's easy to read and easy to see what's quoted. With too much text formatting, it loses the simplicity it has.
Bolding the entire quote is "harsh" and it also removes a layer of accenting. For example, if someone quotes an article and wants to bold something, are they now to use bigger fonts to make a sentence stand out among a paragraph? This looks awkward.
