Okay, this is ridiculous (ads in threads)

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=418061

I see 6 Google ads, 3 rows and 2 columns. 250px tall, or a third of my screen in 1024x768. That's a little much, isn't it?

Particularly ironic considering the topic of that thread. When I saw that, I nearly spit my cool refreshing Coke all over my high resolution Dell monitor.

how long before we have to read/view/click through multiple ads in order to read/respond to posts?

on second thought, maybe I shouldn't give any new ideas.

I think that's probably a google-ad glitch ..as I've never seen an ad like that before in any other thread..

Okay, but in December you also said the ads under the first post were "only a test" as well. When you say that about both it doesn't inspire much confidence that huge ads <i>won't</i> go away.

Wouldn't a more effective solution than giant ads be better parsing of store links into referrals, or maybe a floating div that appears over links to Amazon, DDD, etc. with DVD Talk coupons? I'm not deeply offended by advertising, and we all recognize that the site must generate revenue. But there are ways of generating revenue that complement the site, not work against it.

You have a Firefox logo as your avatar. You should know how to handle that. *cough*adblock*cough, cough*

Oh, I know all about adblock. I like DVD Talk, though, so I adhere to the requirements of using the site. However, I'm trying to suggest alternatives that don't require bigger and more intrusive ads being introduced, but are actually useful to site users and generate revenue at the same time.

By the way, that's the Firefox logo eating the Internet Explorer logo.

This may be a separate issue, but my firefox has been crashing lately when browsing the videogame forum. At least, I think it's just that forum. Don't have ad blocking turned on or anything, but it is annoying. Anyone else experience this? Might it be related to the new ad?

Seems pretty excessive. But hey, guys, think of it as reading a magazine.

Now these ads are really annoying. Why not test them out in the book forum They'll put up with anything.

I wish there was a way to disable an ad for something you've already bought (although I realize you could just lie to get rid of it ). I've had the Sideways DVD for almost two weeks, and I'm still seeing the ad for it.

The ads 'in thread' come from Google Adsense. We don't really control their content. The interesting thing is I've been testing the various sizes and such and there are noticable differences between them in terms of clicks/etc...

That's interesting. What's te relationship? Larger = More Clicks, by a wide margin?

I find the human interface stuff fascinating.

I have no real opinion on the ads themselves. However I have found that I accidently have clicked on the larger ads at least twice, since they fill so much of the screen.

Actually, there are ads in the SAME place on page 2,3 and 4 as there is on page 1.

Again we're still working on it.
