I'm using Firefox (but I'd like to be able to do this in Mozilla and IE as well) and I want to be able to refresh the thread index page everytime I view it. In other words, if I go to the DVD Talk forum, it may show that I have 10 threads that have new messages in them. If I view thread #1, then return to the index page, I want it to refresh the page so that it shows only 9 threads with new messages. It should also show any new threads that were created while I was reading thread #1.

I can obviously do this if I hit the "reload" button on my browser everytime I return to the index page, but I want to have it happen automatically. I've used "about:config" in Firefox to change the "browser.cache.check_doc_frequency" variable so that it compares the page from the server against the page from the cache everytime, but it didn't make any difference. If I go to the extreme of turning off all disk and memory caching, it works, but it is (naturally) slower to load pages.

Is there any way to make this happen?

Yes, that works. It looks like I can also click on the "Forum Jump" button at the bottom of each page to do the same thing. It would still be nice to have it done automatically when I use the BACK button since I have that mapped to one of the buttons on my mouse. That makes it very easy to switch between reading threads and going back to the index page without having to scroll to the bottom or top of each page to click on those links.

right, but isn't this totally browser-dependant (has nothing to do with the forum/site)? when you press the 'back' button on your browser, it goes to the last page you were on, and loads it from your cache, no? (in other words, this is true for all sites - like when you read a hotmail message and click 'back' to go back to your inbox, the message still shows as unread.)


edit: hmm.. maybe not completely browser-dependant, as gmail seems to work differently..

I guess that's the point I was trying to make. When I hit the "back" button on my browser, I want it to reload the index page from the server, not from cache. That's why I thought that setting that variable would do it, but it doesn't. Does anyone have this working with their browser (reloading the index page if you use the "back" button)?

Maybe you could try opening tabs of the forums (like TV, Movie, Other, etc) you may be browsing regularly and just right click one tab and click refresh all? This should be possible with FF & Mozilla, but not with IE, I think Maxthon can do it like FF.

OK, I got this to work by dropping the size of the cache down to 10 KB. It's funny that it didn't work when I turned off the cache completely.
