Well, the ad is certainly annoying, but not as much so as the auto-hot links that appear in your posts in some of those other forums.

Friends — and we are — I've stated my point of view. I respect yours, if we are in disagreement.

I'll certainly give it some time and allow the community to work its will: If I'm the exception to the format on this dear forum, so be it. I guarantee everyone that you'll never read another post from me if this issue remains — that's my choice; be guided by your own. And I'll go one step further and state — whenever there is another DDD sale, and a DVDTALK code is available, I will use that one. I have religiously in the past, and (surprise!) I have clicked on a number of the DVDTalk banner ads from time-to-time, as well.

I appreciate being able to voice my feelings, and I thank Mr. Kleinman for the opportunity to do so publicly. I'll give this some time to play itself out but my deeply-held aversion to this issue will, I am afraid, never change.

the ads in the threads are repulsive and there is no need for them there. just because other forums have them doesn't mean they need to be here. but as others have said the switch was just made and we should give Geoff time to evaluate them as well as other issues which have or will turn up.

You can't move the ad to the top they got one there too. If you don't like it move on to a new forum. I don't think they will change it they want to make money. I just skip over all ad's.

People are not going to like it and it's not going to make them money. Hell even if I see a ad with something I want I won't click it. I'll just open up a new IE window and go to the site myself without clicking the link on the site.

Also this forum has no free speech it is run by a group of people and they can make whatever rules they want. I do wonder why the mods work for free and they are adding more ads to make more money. So the mods are working for free to make someone else money. I don't get it.

you underestimate the community here at DVD Talk. while you are correct that this is a private site with rules that are set by the ownership, they do value the participation and feedback of its members.

Is this is a threat or promise? I mean you act like someone is raping you because there is a box of ads underneath your FIRST POST. I mean the first post in a thread.Thats it.
Its in a seperate box, it doesn't say Miss Peach Wants You to Download movies, and all that jazz. We come onto this forum, cost Geoff bandwith charges, the least you can do is support the way he decides to fund his site.
Through the years, Geoff has been highly sensitive to people re: Pop Up Ads, etc. I don't see this as a big deal...

As for modding, they do it for free, I guess because the enyjoy the community and want to to keep it strong. If seeing ads under a first post is a way we can keep the community strong, so be it.

So you agree with me? Well you have limits they are going to set and you will follow them or be kicked for a week or banned. That is fine cause some people would post child porn and all types of goofy shit if you let them and then cry about free speech when it was removed.

So no this site does not have free speech. The mods are pretty relaxed. I'm shocked I'm not banned yet I know allot of people want to see it. They almost also always write you back if you email them that is nice of them.

I prefer a ad bar on the side or at the top, especially if it's going to be google ads. I really like google's ads, but seeing them in the middle of the text like this makes it more difficult to find them and thus to click on them.

Google's unobtrusive ads are some of the few ads I actually do click on. I make it a point to never click on any kind of animated gif ads anymore, as generally they piss me off. And Flash ads are just blocked, period. But the context matching of google's setup makes this sort of thing very easy to find the types of things I'm usually looking for, and those I do click on. Still, if they have to be on the page, make them vertical or otherwise easy to find.

Hiding them in the thread content makes it far less likely that I'd use them. If I don't see them at the top of the page, they don't get clicked on.

See, I'm the kind of guy who will use an affiliate link if I'm making a purchase (hey, it costs me nothing). I'll buy on impulse sometimes when reading a thread about a product. Making me search for that link leads to me simply going directly by typing it in, thus depriving the site of possible revenue. If you want me to click on your ads, hiding them ain't the way to go.

And BTW, making affiliate links easy to find would REALLY help, I bet. Take the major affiliate links you've got stuck off on the Store Links page and put them in a small frame or something on every page. People use those links, you get some cash. That would make a bigger difference than hidden ads in the page itself.

I agree with Deftones and Otto. I think putting the ad bar on the side would be worth trying. The new one doesn't really bother me though. I think I've already started ignoring it all together. Not sure why Miss Peach keeps going on and on about Taxi Wallets. I have no idea what the heck that means

Seconded (or thirded, or whatevered). Just because some other forums do this doesn't make it any less ugly and intrusive. I also question the effectiveness of such ads. Sure, they're less likely to be ignored, but they're also less likely to be clicked, because they're more likely to be annoying.

i understand the need for as many adverts as you can squeeze into the forum.

i just dont like the new ad thing right in the thread.

i also dont think those auto links in posts on other forums are bad.
you only see them when you put your cursor over them.
i rarely read posts with my cursor going over the words.

it would also be a shame to lose miss peach. she has added a bunch of useful info in the bargains area.
htose who write the "buh byes" and see ya's", maybe you could offer words that would keep her here.

I don't think she's getting blasted. The tone of her original post was overly sensitive, and naturally you should expect to recieve replies in jest about it. Besides, more then a few people have agreed that they dislike the ad placement. But even so, personally I think its a silly reason to abandon a forum because of something so small and insignificant.

Because that's the way we are in this country. People with strongly critical opinions are often told, "If you don't like it, leave!" I'm not surprised to see this ugly attitude with respect to the forum policies.

I won't be offended if an ad appears under my post, and I don't understand why she would be. But I respect her right to be deeply offended, as well as her right to express her thoughts without being insulted or told to leave.

Please don't leave us over an ad placement. I've stated in several of my posts that this is something we're TESTING out, and that it's our intentions to offer a version of this forum to people ad free. This isn't a smash and grab to make lots of money nor an attempt at inundating the forum with intrusive ads so people pay for membership. Actually it's a test to see if there aren't OTHER ways to present advertising to our members aside from the more intrusive ads.

I'm sorry if you were deeply offended, the move wasn't made to offend our members. And when I put it up I did try to clearly mark them as sponsored links.

But we are testing and changing the forum, so there will be growing pains and as I've said in other threads there's no way we can make everyone happy. But we're doing what we can.

I honestly can't see how this would outright offend anyone. It's fairly clear that the ads are in no way related to the thread. Even if someone saw one thread and thought the first poster was endorsing something, they'd go to a second thread, see another ad, and get the picture.

It is intrusive, but not offensive.
