The 'Personal Attacks' forum rule.

How can any attack on an internet forum be considered
"personal"? Doesn't "personal" involve "real" interaction and "real" life?

Whos definition of "personal" includes internet identities?

Am I the only one who thinks this is silly?

Someone the other day in a thread told me (because I was rude and "attacked" someone with words) that some ppl have opinions other than my own (no shit?), and ppl have them in "real" life, and I need to realize that. REAL LIFE?

If this is reality to some of you, you need to re-evaluate what your real life is.

Im not here to be rude, but I may insult someone (insults are nothing more than just opinions too, right?) and I get drilled for it.

Plz some considerate moderator clear this up for me. Thanks.

not a mod, but I'll chime in my 0.02 . Personal attacks are when you start insulting someone or crossing the line and attacking their character. Sure, everyone has an opinion. But if my opinion includes telling the poster that he is a fuck'n moron for having said view and should take his head out of his ass before he forgets what sun looks like. Then that crosses the line and is just taking the subject matter to a bitter back and forth fight that has little, to nothing, to do with the originally topic and will sway the discussion totally off course.

Do you see why personal attacks aren't really looked kindly on here? Regardless of being face to face or not, if you are going to turn it into a street fight the threads discussion will suffer. I don't think I can come up with a situation where personal attacks can be even considered helpful for the discussion.

You can carry you opinion without insulting someone and yes, you are being rude if you do decide to take it to a personal level with them and start insulting them. If the only thing you have left to defend your stance in a discussion is a rude comment towards the poster, you might as well give up. You lost the discussion and will only dig yourself a deeper hole. You can carry a debate/discussion without the need to call each other a poopie head regardless of your opinion conflicting with the others.

At heart, the purpose of any forum is discussion. Personal attacks derail threads and usually turn discussions into shouting matches. They're contrary to the purpose of the forum. You don't have to agree with everyone on here... disagree all you want, but just do it in a civil manner.

With regards to "Internet identities" not being equivalent to "real life"... I think everyone understands that reality does not start and stop on-screen. But zoom out a little bit, and you see that at the far end of everyone's posts is a person. Insulting someone here is the same thing as insulting someone over the telephone, through a letter, or via e-mail. Here, you are a real person expressing your real thoughts, which are being received by another real person who has a real reaction to them. You're not in the same room with that person, but real interaction exists.

I guess I'm one of those "sticks and stones can break my bones..." guys. I dunno... I just can't take anything someone posts too personal or serious. But if some of you do, well.. fair enough.

The thread derailing is a good point, however. Even though that's when threads get interesting and fun, they do veer off from the thread topic. And it is not my forum, so I will respect the rules here.

Thanks all.

I'm pretty thick skinned. I've only ever once felt a post was so out of line that I had to report it. But just remember that not everyone is so thick-skinned, and it's not fair to jump down their throats when they express an opinion. Especially since things that might be deemed a "personal attack" often have nothing to do with the discussion at hand. I might think Jack is a spineless whelp for getting scared by Ju-On, but that doesn't mean I can out and out attack him on it, nor would it further any discussion of the movie.

P.S. I can say that about Jack because he knows I'm joking. See how it works?

Can we make a personal attack on a banned user? I've always wanted to say that cornholio was an idiot, but I don't wanna do it if it's against the rules.

1. Why does everybody quote everybody in here?
2. 'Heroes' was more than just a song, it's an album and Mr. Bowie would appreciate you acknowledging it as such.
3. How come threads get "derailed" like a mother' and nuthin' is done about it?
