Why are some threads relinked before others?

Just wondering why some threads get closed and we are told to use a new thread to continue the discussion after only 150 or so responses, but other threads have 700+ responses and they are allowed to keep going. Is there a rhyme or reason to this? If we're discussing something there is usually a lot of quoting that needs to be done and it's difficult if a discussion is broken up into a bunch of different threads.

Thanks for any input...

depends on the situation. if someone starts a similar thread with breaking news (like once CBS announced they were duped), then the older one is closed. Or if the older thread is getting too heated, it is often closed so people can calm down
