My suggestion for the Other Forum

Either rename it to the Politics/Current Events forum or create a new subforum. It's getting even more ridiculous by the day and will only get worse as the 2004 election gets closer.

Preacher 01-18-04 10:13 PM

I agree wih a subforum soon. This will get out of hand.

Seeker 01-18-04 10:32 PM

We had a War subforum, so let's have an Election/Politics subforum...

Alyoshka 01-18-04 11:09 PM

I agree that from here until after the election (I wish permanently but realize that would probably not happen) there should be a subforum set aside for politics.

heimerSWT 01-19-04 01:15 AM

I give my full support for this idea. But I wish to have no part in moderating it, if it happens.

Crocker Jarmen 01-19-04 01:19 AM

I haven't officialy been a member for a year yet, but I've been reading the Other forum since early 2000. I never post in those political threads, but they are one of the strongest drawing power to that forum. Still, I agree that an 'Election' subforum will be sorely needed. Without, threads about crazy girlfriends and pictures of your child's poop will wither and die under the weight of the political threads.

ditto

El Scorcho 01-19-04 01:32 AM

I'll moderate if it if I can have banning power

gcribbs 01-19-04 01:47 AM

I will cast my lone vote against a subforum for politics.

I think a forum can not survive on crayon threads alone ;)

I can post more and fill Other up with plenty of non-crayon threads.*

*Please do not use this comment as an excuse not to create the subforum since it does seem like a good idea

Yeah, forget this subforum stuff. We need a Politics forum off by itself, with moderators who give a shit about politics.

I actually think that within the political otters there would be quite a few who would be willing to moderate a "Political Forum/Subforum"; however, would be more reluctant to moderate Other.

Bandoman 01-19-04 10:05 AM

Sure, I'll moderate the political sub-forum. As long as I have BandoButters powers.

twikoff 01-19-04 01:24 PM

while we are at it..
can I have a "the damn officials cost my team the game" subforum for the sports forum?

Seeker 01-19-04 06:00 PM

or a twikoff subforum... oh wait, we already have sports.

PixyJunket 01-19-04 06:31 PM

I'd like a Metroid subforum in VG Talk.

damn_skippy 01-19-04 11:57 PM

 Who in their right mind would want to mod that one? Good idea but impossible to control IMO.

El Scorcho 01-20-04 11:41 AM

I don't think it would need a mod. The current political threads seem to go modless as it is. ;)

Groucho 01-20-04 11:55 AM

I'm getting tired of the political grandstanding and mud-slinging in Otter myself. Not suprisingly, it's the Democrats who are most guilty of this.

das Monkey 01-20-04 12:31 PM

NCMojo 01-20-04 05:35 PM

I would happily volunteer to mod the political subforum. :D

jough 01-20-04 05:54 PM

While I try to stay out of the Other forum I agree that a sub-forum would be a good idea - if only to keep those interested in discussing politics on a DVD forum away from you other nuts. :P

El Scorcho 01-20-04 06:00 PM

btw, can we get a verdict on Brantley while we're at it? I could have sworn that part of the reason Aaron Amos was banned was for posting a ton of senseless articles without any sort of intention of discussing them.

I doubt that bahavior helped his case, but that was not the main reason.

Yeah, I know, which is why I said "part" of the reason. We all know the biggest part was that you guys hate Idaho.

RandyC 01-20-04 09:57 PM

It's the damn_potatos

Bandoman 01-21-04 11:45 AM

Can you admins start hating Iowa too?

Dave99 is from Iowa, you know.

Tommy Ceez 01-22-04 08:58 PM

Banning Brantley would rip the heart out of otter.

As an unofficial representative of the right wing of otter, we are requesting the ability to strike no less than three proposed moderators from the list of potential politics/elections sub-forum and are willing to pass a referendum to officially support our position!
;)

Dave99 01-22-04 10:31 PM

Randy might hate idaho because of the damn_potatos, but we have corn here. And corn gets turned into taco shells, and tacos are yummy, and I'm sure randy would agree. So your plan won't work, asshat.

Actually, I think mods who don't care about politics would be more objective.

I'll second that sentiment...without the smilie.

Jason 01-23-04 10:11 AM

I think a separate political forum would work. I read the forums over at macaddict and the specialized political subforum there seems to work well and hasn't affected the volume in the off-topic forum that much.

The MAF has a different demographic, though. Lots more college students/younger people and more non-US posters than we have here.

AndyCapps 01-23-04 10:26 AM

Yeah, but someone has to at least have enough interest in politics to actually want to read the threads. ;)

As with all threads, if there's a post/thread that you feel needs mod attention, report it. That's what the "Report this post to a Moderator" link is for.

I don't know that those that don't care as much would be seen as objective, because polarized people will still often see the middle as "the other side." However as AndyCapps mentioned, the problem is, I normally never read the political threads unless someone sends a report about one. I find them way too tiresome and non-productive.

I agree. My son's poop thread did not get the respect it deserved. :o

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...highlight=poop

I ignore the political threads since I don't care for the arguments.

I think X would like to moderate it. It seems like he starts those threads quite a bit. :)

DodgingCars 01-23-04 11:50 AM

I'm giving in. I was originally against this idea, but now think it would be great.

El Scorcho 01-23-04 12:14 PM

Is this currently being discussed in the mod forum?

There's been no real say either way on this issue by any of the mods here yet.

The war forum worked great when the War on Iraq was going on. When it died down, the forum was gone and that was that. Now with the election coming up TEN months from now, there's already a ton of threads about the candidates, the caucuses, etc. It'll only get worse before it gets better.

It would have to be a zero-tolerance forum.

First personal attack= Suspension.

Second= Banned.
