The Fun has Left The Forum, Or... Something

OK, Preacher starts up a cute thread about his son stealing his car and zooming around the neighborhood, and it gets closed:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=321414

Not a word of explanation in-thread, but let's just assume the standard reasons: concerns about padding, word games, and the ubiquitous "these things never end well".

Now when kvrdave posts a thread entitled, "I'm alone, I might start to drink, and I think I love you", it is allowed to run for three days -- it never was closed, even though it is far more trivial and (sorry, Dave) not nearly as funny as Preacher's thread:

http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=308977

I am not saying that kvrdave's thread should have been closed... after all, he's "top-tier"... but I am saying that Preacher's thread should have remained open, IMO. Part of what is so appealing about the Other forum is that you never know what some people are going to say. The seeming "randomness" of it all. The interplay betwen members. As WhoGirl pointed out, the Other forum is starting to turn into the "advice and national news" forum, which is just not as much fun.

My two cents worth, but threads like the one that Preacher started are what keeps bringing me back to DVDTalk and the Other forum.

8/1-8/3, started on a Friday evening, ended on a Sunday. I'm not around much on weekends. Don't recall seeing a report on it. I guess it's only worth bringing up when a thread you started(or liked) is affected.

I'm trying to actually enforce the rules today. But, of course, I get taken to task for it. Makes me wonder why I bother giving a shit.

If pointless threads that offer no discussion whatsoever(made up stories with real looking thread titles and award thread padfests, for example) are the only thing bringing you here, it may be time to find another hobby. The fun hasn't completely left, we still have crayons.

Yes, I think we should return to the "fun" days of the forum, where every other post was an off-topic "Hey, soandso...check your email."

That's the kind of "fun" that made me leave the forum.

I didn't report it because (as I said in the OP) I liked kvrdave's thread. It was lighthearted and fun -- and I posted in both. I brought up Dave's thread as an example of a fun thread that didn't get cancelled.

Hey, I have gone on record as saying that the mods and admins here do a great job, and I stand by that.

I do not believe that Preacher's thread broke any of DVDTalk's rules. Maybe it falls under the "Posting complete nonsense, gibberish or using the forum to play posting games" category, but that seems extraordinarily arbitrary. The thread was not nonsense, it was not gibberish, and it should not be considered any kind of "posting game".

Kind of harsh, I think. Obviously, there are many things that bring me back to the forum... among them the fact that most of the forum members here can take other people's opinions in stride and not immediately become snide and sarcastic.

You say that the thread offered no "discussion", but I disagree. That's OK, by the way -- ultimately, it is your choice (along with your fellow mods) what to close and what to leave open, and I am fine with that. I just believe that when some threads are summarily closed with no explanation given, it comes across as "the fun leaving the forum" when there may, in fact, be a much more reasoned and insightful explanation.

Goes to show how sometimes even bad things can have good consequences.

Just kidding. I just couldn't pass that one up since you couldn't pass up another chance to knock Other.

I have to side with ncmojo on this one. Unless the majority of mods disagree, in which case I'd like to distance myself as much as possible from ncmojo and any of his ridiculous ideas.

Are discussions of only "serious" issues allowed? Clearly not: see Andy's "we still have crayons" reference. And Andy, no one was "calling you to task" on anything. The feedback forum is here for us to reasonably discuss these issues. No one is saying that you personally were out to kill the fun. I think ncmojo's point is that perhaps, in an effort to weed out the truly frivolous threads, the rules have become a little too strict.

I saw no harm in Preacher's thread. Was it necessary? No, but neither is yet another thread about those stupid/crazy/irresponsible liberals/conservatives.

Actually, as has been stated repeatedly, e-mail is here for us to discuss these particular issues.

X, in an attempt to piss off as many mods and admins as I can, I'm going to reply to your point in-thread...

No, seriously, I do think this is a good topic to bring up in the Feedback Forum. If I privately e-mailed Andy (or some other mod or admin) and asked why the thread was closed... maybe I'd get back an answer, but would that help anyone else? What is the point of having a Feedback Forum except to ask questions and make statements like this?

Wow! Andy re-opened Preacher's thread!

If anything goes badly awry with that thread, I'd like to be the first to point out that this was ncmojo's idea.

I... I am stunned. Absolutely stunned.

I did not even know that you could unlock a thread.

Kudos to AndyCapps, who has now moved to the very top of my "mods that'll I buy a drink for" list.

Careful, AndyCapps. He's got "wandering hands", if you know what I mean.

Just ask Bando.

Good thing we tag team. To handle the late nights, we have Blade in Hawaii... oh wait.

Start pointless threads very late.
