Premium or not, it's a way to help out a site that most people have benefited more from than not.

I really think you need to have them.
I agree, to an extent. I hate avatars, but if they can be turned off it's probably a non-issue.

However, I believe in a previous thread here that it was stated that they ate up bandwith and would slow the overall site down some. If that's the case, I'd still be opposed as I don't want a slower site to due to a feature I hate and can't even see since I'd have them disabled.

I run a separate forum for my fraternity and had avatars at first, but took them off due to bandwidth reasons. It was nice at first, but really not worth it.

That being said, every outward perk that you add will increase the likelihood of someone wanting to sign up.

Like it or not, many people love avatars. I think many will actually pay for the ability to use them, whether they realize they are doing it or not. So long as people have the ability to not see them via a control panel switch, they shouldn't annoy anyone who doesn't like them.

If I pay $30 shouldn't I be able to force everyone to see my Avatar

Good point. But do we really need avatars though?

Will there be a trial period? For instance, I think it would be good to do a day or two where the "premium" forum is available to everyone so they can see what they're getting if the buy the membership. So they can see how much faster it is without ads etc.

You might entice some more people to jump that way.

But of course it may no be feasible given existing advertising contracts.

The makers of the forum software have released a RELEASE CANDIDATE for the upgrade that will enable us to do memberships. As soon as that goes gold we'll be doing the upgrade.

I've already started looking towards the first week of Feb to schedule some time to take the forum offline to do the upgrade

First step is to get everything up and running on the forum, the next will be for me to pull together the premium membership.

Two thoughts:

One would be to add a monthly membership of $2.50. That would be $30 for a year. Take down the annual membership to $25 (which would be two months free), and make the lifetime (if that's still going to happen) $45 (or four months free).

Another would be to see if you could somehow get some kind of discount for certain online shops to paying members. Maybe something like 5% off a purchase, or 10% off a purchase that exceeds a certain amount of money. That would be something people would pay for.

Just a thought.

Will dork have to purchase two memberships (one for "Funny" dork and one for "Serious" dork)?

I hope this ends up helping the site.

I'm not sure that will be as useful as it was in the past. The rapid ascendency of broadband usage in the past few years could make the whole point moot (I've loaded DVDTalk.com at my brother's home broadband setup in at most 4-5 seconds max).

While I like what you are saying, it also sounds like the forum will be offline again soon. First they give you crack for free, then they start to screw with your mind.

Definately looking forward to the premium membership

Geoff posted that comment last January. The version of the forum software he just upgraded to is the version that supports premium memberships.

From the information posted by Geoff in the first post, I dont really see what a paid membership will bring... other than the ability to post things for sale and be entered into free giveaways... Unless you plan on REMOVING access to certain free features that exist now, you will only get few die-hards to pony up the extra dough, maybe that is all you want, i dont know..

All the features that would be worth paying for have already been crossed off the list: avatars, picture hosting, personal messaging... all of which dont exist now because of "bandwith cost" issues -- seems like they should be around IF you are paying!

i dont believe any of the features you listed have been crossed off the list for premium members.. just for free members

i actually would assume that most of what you listed, will be included in the premium membership

from the first post by geoff:

Before I get down to what I'm thinking will be included in the premium service, let me list what won't be included:

2) Image hosting. After a lot of research, there are a ton of issues around Image Hosting which make it very problematic to offer right out of the gate. So don't expect this as part of the membership

4) Avatars. Again a ton of issues to deal with in moderating avatars, so they'll not be there at launch.
