threads getting too long

just curious about this. last night the oscar thread got to like 38 pages or so and it was closed and a part II was started. i think it was closed so that the server didnt "explode" so my question is, how come a thread can't handle the heavy amounts of data but the forum can?

oh, and due to my ignorace regarding the technical working of computers/internet/etc. please explain it like you're talking to a child!

38 pages! Yikes.

Our "Longest Thread Experiment" was something like that. The end result was the server crashed at some point.

38 pages isn't what it used to be since the number of posts per page is now smaller.

Page inflation.

Can someone please summarize this thread for me? I don't have time to read it all.

I do recall that we had changed the number of posts per page as Seeker noted, so that may have something to do with it. The LTE (Longest Thread Experiment) was around 40 pages (I can't recall now) but if there were 50 posts per page, that would be..um... well, a lot of posts.

i seem to start alot of multi part threads

and as a general rule of thumb, I use 200 posts as the limit before creating the next part
