Trolling

I've seen this referred to a couple times...

What's trolling? Or a 'troll' post?

Just wondering

It is a post meant to piss off other people. It is designed to elicit strong negative responses from others.

It's an integral part of fishing where you trim the engine speed and slow down enough to cast off while still keeping the boat moving. They making quiet running trolling engines/props specifically for this.

Trolling posts are usually posts about bass fishing, at least that's what people here usually mean when they refer to trolling. Don't let my friend above fool you. DVDTalk is filled with fishing mavens who love talking bait, hooks, lures, bass, and trolling.

Like I've said before, for trolling get in your boat and run the trolling motor slowly. Bait several fishing poles with small shiners and fish the banks. Best done when the Dogwood trees are blooming. Geeze people it's like ya'll live in big cities or something.

Nah SHRINERS put up too much of a fight. Of course if you hit them over the head with a club first they calm down long enough to impale them on your hook.

Is this a troll?

Depends on the usage. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive, and very often threadcrapping is a subset of trolling in general. In fact, one could argue that the very concept of a threadcrap by definition is trolling. For the most part, threadcrapping has a very negative connotation, but it rides the spectrum between padding and trolling, and consequently, I think people are more prone to refer to non-negative threadcraps as a pads.

Moving along, is there an official term for false accusations of thread-crapping? I simply call it whining, but I'm sure there are better terms. People post requests for opinions about a subject and then accuse others of thread-crapping when they present a well-reasoned opinion different from their own. Hey, if you don't want others' opinions, don't call your thread "What Do You Think About ...?"

</small>I agree.

Although, conversely, when the thread <i>doesn't</i> ask for opinions it may well be that opinions themselves will be off-topic. IYKWIM.

Generally speaking, n’est ce pas?

Usually (but not always) issued by newbs who are not accustomed to the posting styles of “regulars” in a particular forum, or the leeway allowed by the mods. Even within a forum, things change. Other is not what it was a year ago. Dissenting opinion is not enjoyed very much in TVTalk. DVDTalk seems much the same as always, where OAR and “director’s vision” is still the Holy Grail, and Lucas still sux.

Off-topic posts (threadcraps?) may be tolerated more in one forum (Otter?) than another (Books?). Seeing OT posts deleted in a tightly-run forum may shock or confuse a visitor from a more loosely-run forum.

Also, has the accuser actually read the entire thread? A thread might evolve and change from the intentions of the original post. This post is a . However, the thread may be evolving from the original subject (<s>tilling</s>trolling) to something perhaps related. Is the thread still active? Maybe not, and perhaps some sideways move is natural. Should a mod step in and close it because the question’s been answered? Hell no. We haven’t started pointing fingers and slinging poo. Yet.

What I’ve never understood is the accusation of padding (usually in Otter). I don’t see that so much any more, and I assume that those accused of padding have a habit of doing so, but I don’t really pay enough attention to know one way or another. And I’ve never really given a fat fig about post counts anyway.

But that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong, and frequently am.
