Duplicate threads and policing the forum: is it our duty?

Well, I did it. I just reported a duplicate thread. I feel so dirty.

Not only is "ibtl" no longer fashionable, it’s just about impossible. (Sidebar: I wonder how much system resources are tied up with that little bit of magic?)

Post an admission of knowledge that a thread is duplicate, and risk the wrath of a mod admonishing us to use the “report this post” feature.

What is so tragically wrong with a little ibtl fun? I think the mods are doing a wonderful job without our help, so I don’t really feel compelled to report duplicate threads.

I mean, it’s not like any does any padding around here any more.

Please enlighten me.

It's not anyone's duty (well, except the mods), but reporting problem threads and posts really helps the mods do their job, which in turn helps the forums run more smoothly. I know people liked IBTL-ing for some reason (I did it, too, a few times), but it really serves no useful purpose other than padding your post count. Plus, some people would IBTL in threads that the mods don't decide to lock, and that throws off the flow of discussion and/or starts fights.

Looks like you answered your own question. IBTL stands for "In Before The Lock," and it's what some people like posting in threads that they think are going to be closed down. However, we're trying to discourage it.

So you're allowed to circumvent the censor?

I know you're joking around, but, technically speaking, a member can't provide official explanations of the rules, so, no, it's not in the membership agreement.
