Help? New To The World Of Dvd's

I just received a DVD player as a gift a few months ago and know nothing about what all of the abbreviations P & S, foormats etc. stand for. Is there a site to go to to learn all the DVD jargon to fully enjoy them and know what I am buying or what I want for my own personal needs.
Thanks in advance,

1. Try the "Frequent Topics" thread that is stickied to the top of the DVD Talk "Main" forum.

2. Lurk about the Main Forum and Hardware Forum for a while to see how things go.

3. When you have a question, use the search feature in the upper-right-hand corner or the screen.

4. If you can't find any existing threads on your question, post a thread and wait for the knowledgeable community here to chime in... or flame you if the topic's been done to death.

Welcome to the bank-account-emptying world of DVD!

You may see this term as you're learning: J6P = Joe Six-Pack = Someone who knows nothing about these new technologies and has no desire to learn, even at the most basic level.

The very existance of this thread means you're no J6P (not that there's anything wrong with that ) ... you're an Afficionado in Training. Depending on what you're already familiar with, there may be a many new terms and concepts, but if you ask a question, the posters in the "Main" forum will be very willing to help. You'll find that some things are almost universally agreed upon, whereas others are subject to great debate. With a little effort, you'll be educated about these things in no time and ready to form your own decisions to maximize your viewing enjoyment to your own tastes.

Depending on your level of interest in film/television/music, there is a wealth of information and wonder waiting for you ... on DVD. [/Announcer Voice]

Enjoy!

P.S. Stay away from the Other Forum ... my dog strayed in there almost 23 months ago ... no sign of her since ...
