How about a post ratings system?
I visit http://www.slashdot.org on occasion, and I like how each of the posts are scored from 1-5 with comments such as Score: 5-Insightful or Score:3-Funny.
Now the main reason that Slashdot does this is that they're organized in a directory tree structure, and since a user has to click on a particular post in a sublevel it helps the user decide what is valuable to read. DVDTalk isn't organized in this way, so we probably wouldn't need it for that reason, except perhaps for multipage threads.
What would be nice however is if infrequent users can setup their DVDTalk account to automatically email/cache/etc all of the posts or threads that are rated 5 or are rated as funny. It would also be nice if this system could email/cache/etc posts from a particular user or threads started by a particular user. There are certain users who start threads that are almost always funny or informative..it'd be nice to have that option so if you're away for a day or two you wouldn't miss gold.
I'm sure there are many holes in this idea, just wanted to bring it to attention. Thanks!

I believe this idea was shot down in the past because it took more bandwith and there was concern that it would just lead to bickering and flamewars as people voted down each others threads.

The method works well if you have a message board that consists of responses to a couple dozen news items per day. It would be ridiculous for DVD Talk.
