V: Pop Ups
FYI: we are doing some testing and modification to that V Pop-up ad as there have been some more problems with it. If you are getting the pop-up every page then you need to allow cookies so it'll stop.
The ad should only run through mid month and then no more pops this month

As someone that appreciates what you have done by allowing us to carry on banter here, what kind of donation would it take to stop those ads for say two weeks?
Understand that I'm not complaining, just wondering what I can do to help -- that's all ...

If you're looking for feedback, I've seen them a couple (three?) times in the last 4 hours. I don't really mind as I've finally been able to redeem myself by answering the questions correctly.
I take it the popunder is a separate deal and happens independently of the V campaign.

This campaign is the bain....
Ok because of a SNAFU it's now 1x per hour, which I know sucks but hey we have to deliver on our commitments to the adveriser.
When the ad has delivered all that we've commited to it'll stop and hopefully we won't have pop-ups again

Feedback: same as the Wiz ... seen it a few times today. Nothing too bad and certainly nothing like before. Hasn't been a nuisance at all (if only the same could be said for me and Wizdar).

It's a dirty job...

In our absence the void would have to be filled. Perhaps with someone with less compassion and understanding than ourselves?

just curious.. if someone is running a pop up stopper, does dvdtalk still get credit?
I mean, i know the app works by quickly and automatically closing the ad, but how long does that ad need to load to count?
if it does still count for dvdtalk, then great
if it doesnt.. then shouldnt people stop constantly suggesting using it here?

Restating that I myself am no fan of them... Here's how pop-ups work for the current campaign:
DVD Talk has 'sold' a fixed number of impressions/views to the pop-up. We have to keep serving them until we've reached our commited number
So if you are using a pop up stopper the ads served to you don't get counted and need to be served to someone else.

I don’t suppose any of you
guys plan on giving Geoff a break any time soon?
They are what they are. They’ll be over when they’re over.
Maybe he should make them pop with every page view to end the commitment sooner? Whaddaya think?
Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Geoff, I found an ad I completely tolerated and it can't even be closed or made to go away. Check out this page: http://www.golf.com/gdc/news/article.asp?id=5833 and notice the banner on the right that follows you as you scroll, and it's not as obtrusive as that V ad. You could adjust the tables here so that it won't obstruct any views like that web site has done. Food for thought.

The most difficult part of all this is that I am not the one talking to a studio or agency saying 'hey how about a pop-up'. They come to me and say we're looking for X-Y-Z types of ads, how much would that cost.
I had a long talk with a company who is helping me with some of this ad stuff and they basically said that the people they talk to will happily take their business to sites which DO accept pop-ups and rich media in favor of ones that don't. Not what I wanted to hear

The funny thing is, I feel no more compelled to click on the V banner the 90th time than I did the first 10 times. I'm glad Warner is paying you well for the pop-up though, I'm not sure how effective it is for them.

Hey Geoff: question: How come no music banners for the music forum, video game banners for the video game forum, or book ads for the book forum? Seems to me you'd reach your different audiences better that way.

Well, I’m saying that you want to get killed for suggesting even MORE ways for Geoff to incorporate popups, which, as it turns out, is not a popular concept.

I see what you mean
The post about ads in the music forum or whatever I didn't mean popups, just banners.
Yeah porno banners at night and DVD/misc banners during the day probably pay the bills, but I have a feeling that putting banners appropriate to each subforum would also pay the bills if not moreso. If you mean the page where the thing follows you on the right, if I had to choose my poison between that and those annoying V popups, I would take that. V makes me move my mouse to close something, the following thing allows me to simply not look at it.
I've basically accepted Geoff needs to make some scratch somehow and trying to throw some ideas at him although I'm sure he's entertained them before.
