handle - As stated earlier in the thread you getting so many pops is a BUG. There is a cookie being set so that you should only get 1 per 12 hours. What version of what browser are you using?

Blade closed my other thread.

Why does the Feedback Forum FAQ say 'DVDTalk DOES NOT USE POP UPS! I promise!'

I still think there should be a way for us to opt-out.

Because there are no pop ups... only pop unders. When one of the advertisements comes up, it comes up behind your current window. So instead of getting the focus(as a pop up would), what you were looking at still has the focus. They are less annoying than pop ups in that you do not have to move them or close them to get back to what you were looking at.

It's tough to allow someone to opt-out of one of the few things that helps pay the bills.

If you guys are going to inforce the "one and only" concept, perhaps you could make this sticky. I assume the default view for this part of the forum is 2 days (since I've never made a change), and often this thread slips from view.

Geoff posted a link to this thread and asked what he was talking about in his thread, bworrell then responded that he was indeed talking about the pop unders. At which point, I directed him to this thread (again) as he was asking questions that had been gone over already, and then closed the thread. Just so no one thinks I just closed his thread and told him to do a search.

Still, a good suggestion. It's a sticky now.

bworrell,

As already noted, these are popunders, not popups. And Geoff is always looking for ways to support this site without using "rich media" as these types of ads are sometimes referred to, but sites that run off of advertising have been having a very hard go of it since the Internet craze died quite some time ago. While your opinion is noted and appreciated, I don't think there's too much we can do to change this without dramatically affecting the board.

You might want to read over this thread to see if it addresses any other questions/objections you might have.

Also, the part of the FAQ I quoted was really addressing some much older complaints when we were being accused of using pop ups when we weren't. This was often the result of the ad server giving us ads we didn't sign up for, or forgetting to opt us out of the pop up ads for our rotation of ads.

However, except for a one time ad campaign with Warner for an online contest giveaway, DVDTalk's forums have never purposely used pop ups.

Perception of many people: (myself included)

pop-ups = pop-unders

It's really too bad, as DVDTalk is the only site I visit that uses pop-up ads.

Speaking for myself, I never thought that for a second.

(But I understand where you're coming from. Seems anybody who even hints about doing a search gets flamed these days. )

I disagree, pop-ups are a whole different animal.

Pop-Ups - in your face and you need to deal with it before you can do anything else

Pop-Unders - under your browser window, easy to ignore and you don't have to deal with them until you want to

Also it's 1 ad every 12 hours. Pretty small price to pay

I disagree with your disagreement of bworrell’s disagreeable perception.

Many folks don’t see the difference. Between you and others who have discussed the different forms of pop, some of us (those who have paid attention to the discussions) understand. But to most, any kind of pop is a pop-up, similar to those who believe them damn_black_bars cover up part of the picture.

Now, see, Geoff, here’s a situation where a :heavysigh: smilie would come in handy. It wouldn’t be judgmental like , but could express patient exasperation with the issue.

Tasteless Five Star Ad Now Running All Over

There is an ad for Five Star that shows a woman in bondage being led by some dude. It is kinda tastless. I don't mind porn ads at night, but this one seems kinda extreme

It says "follow your fantasies or obey your fantasies" and has a clown on ht left side too. I am not making this up.

It's gotten enough complaints that we're taking it out of the rotation

I haven't visited this thread since it's early inception. I won't even get back into the whole semantics debate. However, I dropped into the DVDTalk homepage, straight to forums. By that time I had 3 (THREE!) pop UPs. Not unders, arounds, besides, or alsos. So I came here to complain. This has been going on for awhile.

I understand that the bills need to be paid. I'm just sorry to see the site go the way of so many others and lose some of its luster.

I won't quit coming here. But I can guarantee that I will never click a pop-up. Or a pop-under. Or a pop warner.

I'd suggest losing this one too, some people are bound to get very offended by it

edit - For some reason, it cut the ad in half. It was an ad for BAIT magazine with a very young looking woman/girl.

Do you think might have some sort of spyware on your system? It's entirely possible that the ads are coming from somewhere else.

I posted some info on this in the FAQ thread in this forum.

Also, the DVDTalk home page (not the forum) DOES use pop ups, but only for the DVDTalk newsletters, and it's supposed to go away if you say "no thanks" or do actually sign up. It uses your cookies to set this, but I've personally had a problem with my home system having this pop up every once in a while, regardless.

I won't say that my system is airtight, but no, I make sure there is no spyware on my computer.

So are you guys starting to ramp up the "spam" e-mail too? I've gotten three e-mails this week from DVD Talk that aren't the newsletter (which I don't mind getting) - spam for buying Frailty, and Warner SEs. Is there a way we can "opt out" of getting this kind of spam? I can handle the pop-ups and so forth but the last thing I want is to get MORE damned spam in my e-mail. Love the site, but spam is my sworn enemy.

Well, you have to sign up for these, so they aren't really spam. But there's an unsubscribe link in each of these emails. Scroll to the bottom and read the instructions.

Also, I believe the one's you mentioned were for deals that will expire before the next weekly newsletter comes out, and were just meant as a heads up.

Aren't those the links you're never ever supposed to use because it just confirms your email and sets you up for more and more and more spam?

I assume you're joking, but just in case you're not... As true as this is, it's also only a concern for email coming from sources you are unfamiliar with. If you are getting email from the [email protected] address, then it's email you purposely signed up for and not randomly generated spam designed to get good email addresses to build a database with.

DVDTalk does not go out and get emails and randomly send them to people. If you are getting email from DVDTalk, it's because you signed up for something and if you don't want to get it anymore, just use the unsubscribe links (and if, for whatever reason, this doesn't work, send Geoff an email and he'll physically remove your email from the database...glitches do happen.)

If I'd seen it or if you had posted the image you were concerned with, I could voice an opinion, but I haven't seen it, so I can't really comment.

And Geoff's the only one in contact with our ad server, so he's really the only one who can do anything about it. I'm guessing that no one else is commenting because they didn't see it, or didn't have a problem with it if they did.

Try waiting a day or two, or reposting if you see it again. Geoff's got a lot of things to keep track of, so he just may not have seen your post yet.
