Because they're on

Wouldn't have posted if I hadn't already read the thread and tried the cookie fix. I did a typo though and said off when I meant on.

Update:

I'm getting a pop-under on each and every page, each and every time I click a link. Could this be a problem specific to OS X and IE 5.2 for Mac?

Surf, Could be. IE should have a security setting on cookies, possiably you need to add DVD Talk to the trusted list

Made DVDTalk a trusted site and I still get popup/popunders on each and every page each and every time. I stopped using About.com because of this sort of thing. I'd hate to have to abandon DVDTalk as well (not a threat, just a lament).

Okay. So this ad is supposed to pop-under the open window, right? Once every 6 hours, right? Hmmm. that's not how it's working for me. It seems that I'm getting it at least once an hour, right on top of whatever I'm reading.

I'm not complaining, just stating how it's working for me. I'm using Windows 98 at work...

What's your paypal link again?

The pop unders are supposed to work that way, and be 1 every 12 hours if I remember correctly.

But DVDTalk is still running a promotion with Warner Bros. for their V miniseries DVD release and that is a pop up and Geoff had to increase their frequency to meet his required number of views.

If it's the V one, then I'm guessing that's about right, and it will be over soon (within the week would be my guess, but I'm not sure when). If it's for the Magazine deal, it shouldn't be coming up that frequently

Just to throw in again with my experience.

The V add comes up on every forum page other than Other every time I view a new page. The magazine deal add comes up every time I view a page in the Other forum. I've been seeing each of those ads dozens of times a day.

Seems like your cookies might be messed up.

Check out the FAQ thread in this forum for instructions on cleaning out your cookies. That might help.

Actually, I'm a Web developer so I already know how to clear cookies etc. It sure is an annoying bug. I clear out cookies, make DVDTalk a trusted site, log out, log in and all to no avail. I still get a pop up or pop under window on each and every forum page each and every time. Sucks.

This MAY pretty much shoot down a theory posted in another thread, but maybe not. How is your setup different from mine? I have the same [lack of] problems as noted by others. Three different computers running three different OSs (WIN98SE, XP, & NT). All use IE6.x.

I’ve gotta believe that you (and others) have changed something from the normal default install that produces the problem.

Disclaimer: I’m NOT saying (as has been previously misinterpreted) that I don’t believe you have the problem. I have no reason to doubt your experience. I’m just askin’.

Good, cause I'm all out of poo analogies.

das

P.S. That's just an expression ... I've got plenty more and will use them when necessary.

P.P.S. I don't have this problem either. Whatever code change was made after that first mishap where everyone complained at the same time fixed my popup issues. Now I just get one every few hours or so.

That's nothing a sledgehammer can't resolve.

No kidding! That's a solution I'm about to use.

I have had a little success with deleting cookies. The popups/unders will work right for a single session and then go back to happening every time I view a page. I really think that there must be a problem with how one of the cookies is written. Some kind on bug between it and IE on OS X. Very frustrating.

I have a question about the V: The Final Battle pop-up ad. Okay, so it's popped up on me like 100x. So I finally decided to click on it. It then pops up a window with three sections you can flip between: sweepstakes, about the DVD, and trailer. Now, I click on about the DVD and I learn:

Special Features:
- Behind-the-Scenes Documentary Inside V.
- Director Commentary.
- Gag Reel
- New Digital Transfer
- First-Time Widescreen Video Release.
- First-Time Availability in Dolby® Stereo.
- International Trailer
- Format: Widescreen (16X9 1.85:1).
- Subtitles: English, French, Spanish

Am I dumb, or isn't The Final Battle bare bones? Isn't this the original feature list for the original V miniseries DVD, before the gag reel was dropped? WTF?

I don't mind pop ups, but it seems like this has been going on forever, and THE AD IS NOT EVEN REMOTELY CORRECT AS TO THE DISC'S FEATURES.

Hmmmm...

According to this review:
Considering that the first disc had a behind-the-scenes featurette and an excellent full-length commentary from Kenneth Johnson, it is disappointing that nobody threw together any bonus features at all for this sequel. The closest thing to a supplement you'll find is a brief text page of cast & crew credits, nothing more.
As for subtitles:
The disc offers closed captioning as well as subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and a few more languages I didn't recognize.
while Amazon lists English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Thai, and Bahasa. (And no extras listed.)

DVDPlanet, Buy.com, DVDEmpire, and CD/Video Universe don’t seem to list any extras, either.

Nor does the Warner site.

From G. Noel Gross’s review:
Extras: zilch.

Hmmmm…

Edited to add: sound is mono, not stereo, yes?

I'm reaching my personal breaking point. Whether DVDtalk was a family friendly site a year ago wasn't an issue, who was to say one way or the other anyhow. But now, these porn ads, i hate to seem sensitive, but they take the site down a level, and they yell "not a friendly site". They make pop-ups look good. The adult ads are really detering me from the site. On top of that i can't really refer the site to freinds or family, (which i had done in the past) knowing that they're going to be subject to the adult ads. Recently i havn't been coming to the site except on my own personal computer because of them. I won't visit the site at work, or at freinds, or at school, or at family members computers. Regardless of the time, i just don't want to run the risk of being responsible for that content showing up on their computer. I mean its 9:30 here on a thursday evening, and as soon as i load a dvdtalk page there's some porn ad. I understand you need money to run the site, you can put those ads in mature talk, and maybe even "other" for all i care, but having them in video game talk at 9:00... There has to be a friendlier way to make $0.03.

(* I don't mean this to be a rant, or to sound judgemental, although it reads like it. I understand you need cash for the site, there just has to be a better way.)

So, is anyone doing anything about the overabundent popunders? It's driving me nuts. I still get one on every page I look at. Clearly it's a bug of some kind, probably related to OS X with IE 5. I can't be the only one having this problem.

Anyone? Anyone?

Also, it should be noted that none of the forms on the site work with Netscape 7.

We are sensative to members who do not want adult ads, so that's why THEY ONLY RUN AT NIGHT. Also in the forum there's an 'impression cap' so you should not be seeing more than 4 adult banners per hour on the forum. Also I'll test out starting them in the forum at 10pm EST and see if that doesn't help.

I've stated before that we turn away at least 1 adult advertiser a week, and only have 2 sites on DVD Talk who sell adult product (and only 1 which is exculsively adult).

Surf - Not sure what's up with your system. There IS a cookie being set so you should only get them 1x 12 hours. Can you update to the latest rev of IE?

Already have. 5.2.1 is the latest for OS X. Netscape isn't having the problem so it seems clear that IE is the problem.

These pop-up adds are RIDICOULOUS

I will not be visting this site any longer if the pop up adds continue to work like they are now. EVERY time I click a link to a post an ad pops up or under my screen. Trying to log in to this forum and post a reply neeted 10 pop up windows.

I often work in a multiple windows while using my computer and if these popup/unders take the focus away from what I am working on your site lsoes a lot of value to me. I'll switch over to my PC where I have pop-up blocking software AND banner blocking software to visit here. That way i won't EVER see any of your advertisers.

Do you realize that on a Mac the last opened browser windows controls the size of the next one spawned so that if I apple-n a new window it is often 200x400 pixels wide?

Your site goes on my s**tlist for a few days and then I'll come back. If it still is throwing as many popups as celebrity porn sites it will be treated with the same status.
