Not exactly. The reason I come here is the number of members. With 28,000 members registered, no matter what kind of arcane question you ask, odds are somebody is going to know the answer. If these pop-ups start driving people away, and discourage new people from joining up, we're going to lose critical mass. Look at the forum at DVDFile. I never go there because the lack of numbers means very few threads that I have an interest in. Here there might be 50 new threads started in a couple of hours. But if enough people leave here, that will only encourage more people to leave, and start a death spiral.

THIS IS SOOOOO TRUE. I refuse to goto sites that have pop-ups. It is a major turn off. I would like to know the date the pop-offs will be done so I can come back to this great fourm. Please let us know when it will end!!!!

Somebody post a like to the pop-off killer download!!

Foo which one did you download? I downloaded one that didn't like my O/S and kept crashing IE

mllefoo 08-01-02 11:22 PM

I downloaded Power Popup Killer, which works only in IE. It has a toggle so you can switch it on and off.

Painkiller 08-01-02 11:26 PM

POW! is another good pop-up killer. These pop-ups have erased any chance of me buying V.

greatjedi 08-01-02 11:43 PM

No "V" DVD for me!!!
This has to be the worst (and most persistent) popup I have EVER encountered. :(
Please, make it go away.

gcribbs 08-01-02 11:46 PM

I have been worried for a long time that things are real tight here at Dvdtalk. maybe Geoff makes enough to pay the bills however he still needs to eat and live somewhere also.

I make sure that I click on the dvdtalk links all the time. I think many others do also. However I bet most do not at all. I bet that when he posts threads asking for help he gets a small bump in revenue that falls quickly back to normal.

I just minimized it and moved on. I understand it pisses some off.

what should he do?

Do you think he would be doing this if money was rolling in?

He is doing this because he has to I bet :(

Rammsteinfan 08-01-02 11:51 PM

:johnwoo: Kill the damn pop up already. Seeing it every freakin page... ARGH! I can see the main page but not every thread, reply, and who knows, I probably get ads popping out of previous ads!

X 08-02-02 12:05 AM

I don't know what you guys are having trouble with. I got maybe three or four popups (or unders, I really wasn't paying attention) today from DVD Talk on two different computers. My visits to CNN were much worse with popups each time I left them. I won't even tell you how many times I saw Orbitz and some loan ad while reading the news today.

Now I hate popup stuff as much as anyone else, but this really isn't worth all the bitching I see here unless you have some really messed up system that gives them to you on every page you go to. If you do you might want to think about what is causing the problem, like not accepting cookies.

criptik28 08-02-02 12:09 AM

I guess we all have different browser settings. For some it doesn't seem to be so bad, whereas for others (e.g. me) it appears on every single page. Now while I hate pop-ups, I do use Pow! to kill them within a second or so, and I can understand Geoff's need to generate more income.

My computer accepts cookies and I still get a $**** load of pop-ups!!!!!

Same here. Not a problem.

For those of you saying the pop ups will drive away members how many members would leave if this was a subscription site? Cause thats the trend. I see all the online content providers leaning one way or the other. More persistant ads or memberships. Or just get run into the ground like Daily Radar. Good sites try to achieve a balance. I think DVDTalk is doing a great job of this. Look at ARStechnicha. They have ads and certain areas of the forums are members only. I understand the balance theyre going for, they dont want the ads to drive anyone away but they dont want the forums to lose too much activity. Myself Id rather just minimize the ads and move on.

The dotcom world has changed. Do we pull together as a community and wait for it to change again or do we let this fracture it? Thats how I see it.

Then I just don't understand what your problem is. As I said, I got a couple per machine today.

I allow cookies but I don't allow ActiveX. I used to get requests to run ActiveX controls here (which I always rejected but drove me crazy anyway because I had to respond to the request just to reject it) but I haven't had them for a while so it's not ActiveX causing it. So I just don't know what else it could be.

My cookies are set on, and that's about it. You might try using Ad-aware to clean out your system. I do that every couple of weeks and did it again last weekend.

I'm not sure what people's settings are but on mine, I get the pop ups every page as well. Actually I didn't notice it until i closed my firewall (zone alarm) to do fiddling with it. WIth zonealarm (which blocks popups) turned off, i couldn't even look through a few threads in the other forum without becoming really, really frustrated. now zonealarm is running again and i'm happy again. :D i feel for all of you with no means to stop the madness. i really do.

I wonder how many emails Geoff is getting about this little system glitch/experiment. Oh well. I figure it will be fixed by tomorrow so hopefully this will not end up being a problem.

God, go away for a few hours and bedlam breaks loose.

The pop-up is a LIMITED campaign that is running in select areas of the site.

It's SUPPOSED to pop up ONLY 1x per 6 hours per person, but obviously there's some sort of mess up.

I'll look in to it. Certainly don't want people to get it with every click!

GeoffK 08-02-02 01:11 AM

I've tried to update the code on the forum so it's now 1 per 6 hrs. Hopefully this will help.

LET ME KNOW IF IT'S STILL POPING LIKE HELL and I'll address it.

It's not popping up for me anymore. I don't mind a pop up here and there, but that one was clearly out of hand.

Thanks for fixing it!

mverleg1 08-02-02 01:58 AM

There don't appear to be any more issues with it now. I agree with PunkYou. I really don't mind the occasional pop-up, but EVERY CLICK was getting REALLY annoying. You seem to have fixed the issue there. Thanks.

Trigger 08-02-02 03:50 AM

It's not popping up anymore - good. I did buy that FHM, Stuff, and Maxim magazine deal from the pop-up - hope that helps this site a little cuz I know I'll NEVER even look at those magazines. Maybe my girlfriend will read em.

das Monkey 08-02-02 08:05 AM

As the original post said, no problems with the intermittent pop-ups. Glad it was a glitch and not a policy. I know some do-gooders will cling to the "if I have to eat my own poop to keep DVD Talk alive, then I'll do it!" stance, but I think it's unreasonable to expect everyone to think that way. Thankfully, it appears to really be a non-issue, since this functionality was not intendended. However, it may prove a good indicator of how we'll react if something like this were intentional.

Now that's a scary thought. Imagine this thread if Geoff had said that he was doing it on purpose

joltaddict 08-02-02 08:39 AM

It was never popping like mad for me in the first place. I figured it was being exaggerated. Its the same for me today as it was yesterday. Once on the home PC and once on the work one.

PS - I wouldnt eat my own poop. ;)

No exageration here. Literally, every click brought the pop-up.

Excellent point. I will not eat my own poop. However, I would consider paying a small membership fee if it came to that. In fact, I sorta just did with my donation last week.
