What’s with the popunders these days?

It looks like they’re back, not that I’m complaining. But they only lead to the DVDTalk front page. And the latest one I got was one of those off-center ones. We hates them! (Now, I know there are more than a coupla ways of closing them, but I seem to want to click on the X for some reason. And that stuff usually only happens with pr0n popunders.)

I wonder how much Geoff is charging himself for these?

Pop-Unders are indeed back. And one of the defaults is the Subscribe page for the DVD Talk Newsletters.

Which one was an off center one? I can look in to it.

Off center = the one I got this morning, about 10 minutes before the post.

None that I've encountered this weekend and this morning have led anywhere but the page you mentioned.

I believe what's happenning is that we have half.com up as a popunder. But half.com has a popup on their site, as well as a "popafter" (?) when you close their site out.

So, you get our pop under, which generates their pop up, and when you close both of those, you get their pop after as well. There's your three windows.

FYI, I merged your thread with the existing one to keep everything together.

I guess it's not pr0n until you hit maybe 10 pops (under, over, "after", "during", "while you're closing all the other pops", ...)

You have to wonder if they realize that the more obnoxious the ad, the less likely anyone is to pay attention to it. If I see a banner atop DVD Talk, I look at it. If it's interesting I may go check it out. If I see a pop-up, pop-under, pop-after, pop-over, pop-tart, popsicle, pop-warner, or popcorn, all I can think about is how quickly I can close it and how much I don't like the source of it. Those damn pop-overs (I guess that's what they're called) are enough to make me leave a site and never return they're so annoying, especially when they have audio. Yahoo! and MLB.com have run me away by just pushing this nonsense too far. There comes a point where the ad revenue can't be worth pissing everyone off. If I owned a B&M, and a guy offered to pay me $1.00 if I kicked each customer in the shin every time he entered the store, I don't think I'd do it. Now, if there were midgets involved, maybe, but that's another issue.

Geoff, is there any way to prevent those who are already subscribed to the newsletter from getting this particular pop-under? I'm guessing the answer is no, but it would be nice if it could be done.

I've only seen the DVDTalk subscribe page. And I get it twice in the morning; once at home, once at work. So I have twice the potential to get them.

The pop-under it supposedly came from although instead of under it popped up as well.

The pop-after once i closed the supposed pop-under.

these hit me when i came into the feedback forum even though i had been logged in for at least 30 minutes.

This is a little much.

I got my AMEX Blue from here.

I don't even mind pop-unders, but if they don't work as advertised and they spawn pop-ups...

I was not aware that the Half.com pop-under was spawning 2 related pop-ups. I've taken it out of the rotation.

Also the subscribe page pop-under was a test, so that's not coming up now as well. So for now all the pop-unders should stay under

I do have some news that will not sit well with some. Sometime next week we will be running a limited number of pop-ups related to a Warner Bros DVD campaign. Unfortunately Pop-ups were a REQUIREMENT in order to get this campaign and if we had said no to pops we wouldn't have gotten it.

We'll do everything we can to limit the intrusive advertising on the site, so understand that we DO take your comments very seriously and are constantly balancing the needs of our members with the need to support and run the site.

Yep... That one looks a little 'out of place' when it shows up on my workstation here at work...

"oh... why are you browsing places with scantily clad women?"

Well, I've been holding back on this, but they actually pup UP for a fraction of a sec. Are they supposed to do that?

Maybe vapoRware clicked while it was going from "up" to "under"?

I think vaporware is correct and there may be a problem with the pop-under system. Lately, I too have been getting the ads that are normally pop-unders as popups, including the Maxim ad and the ad for V - The Final Battle. Were these ads meant to be the obtrusive popup variety or could there be a problem with the code somewhere that's causing these to popup all of a sudden?

Frankly, this being a DVD board, I got no problem with DVD popups. The inevitability of the situation, however, is that this is just the beginning. I firmly believe that Geoff dislikes pop-anythings as much as we do, but if the board is to continue, it either becomes a pay site (which is a radiculos idea), or we put up with it. This is just a simple fact that Geoff will have to come to terms with (if he hasn’t already). And so will we.

At the moment Geoff is entertaining these complaints, but we’ve moved from no pops to pop-unders, to “It’s gotta be a popup, but it’s a DVD campaign.”

Next he’s gonna sign a deal for a non-DVD popup, and a thread will be started about that. And Geoff will respond and we’ll be understanding. Or Not. But he either pays the bills, or pulls the plug. N’est pas?

Geoff, I support the site by clicking-thru-purchases when I can. I’ll add one more little thing: no more complaints from me about popsh|t. Although I’ll really have to bite my virtual tongue if/when they pop in off center.
