Do we really need the porn advertisements on the main pages?
I just noticed this today, and it really bothers me. I keep my computer on all day, and most of the time it is on DVDTalk. However, I still live in the same house with my parents, and I don't want them walking by the computer and seeing porn banners. I hate sounding like a prude, but I feel those advertisements have their own place (the mature forum), and are not appropriate on the main forum pages. Thanks.

They are only supposed to come up in the evenings (Pacific time, I believe) and while they may be advertising porn, the banners themselves should never really look like porn (unlike the banners in Mature).
If you see anything too provocative, or showing up at the wrong time, save the url (right click and select copy shortcut) and post it in here. Geoff will take a look at it.
Otherwise, if more people bought stuff via the non-porn related banners, then they'd get more "air" time.

and can you also put the porn/soft core porn reviews in the mature forum also, since i do not want to have one of those flicks on the screen at 2 in the afternoon.

To restate our policy. We only show ads on the site for mature DVDs in the evening and all the ads are PG-13 or better. We're sensative to members who aren't crazy about adult ads but the truth is that they do help us be able to have the funds to run the site.

There's not really a solution that will make everyone happy. If you work nights, you might just have to avoid DVD Talk until you get home. Geoff's got to pay the bills somehow, and adult ads generate more revenue than other ads.

Sorry guys, wish I could be more acomidating, it's just the harsh reality of running a .com in 2002. Maybe sometime in the future things will change and we can move some things around and elimiate pop-unders and such. But I've got to look at how we can sustain DVDTalk at a time when most .coms are .gones

I personally don't mind the ads, and I understand internet businesses can have tough times. I'll just have to remember I might get an ad or 2 that I will have to quickly scroll down to avoid having it seen

Jeez, these are some big adult dvdempire banner ads, and I'm getting them as soon as 6 p.m. Pacific time -- I don't really consider that "late". I don't know, I know you have to pay for the site, but some of these ads are really wack to see flashing you in the face right at the top of the page like that. But that's just MHO.

I believe the evening times are based on EST. The main idea was to time them some most members wouldn't get them at work, and most people are off work by 6 p.m. pacific (9 p.m. EST) so that was the best compromise Geoff could come up with.
Plus, the forums seem pretty busy from 9-midnight EST, so Geoff delayed the ads any later, he'd lose a lot of views and clicks and lose revenue.

I opened the OTHER main page, not Mature, at 8am EST this morning and I get a big Five Star DVD ad that shows a blowup doll with a wide open mouth!
I don't mind the regular 5-star ads in the main, non mature pages, but come on, a blowup doll in the ad at 8am EST? I thought the mature forum was added to make the other forums "family friendly". I don't think this particular ad is appropriate anywhere but in the mature forum.
