What's going on with the [MATURE] Threads?

I've heard rumors that they are soon to be gone, but I don't know what that means....I can't comprehend an otter without webcam girls or hot german DJs or even Dr. Betho threads. What is happening?

Actually, with Geoff's proposed plan, there will be more mature threads, they just won't be in other.

They'll be in their own forum, and you may have to pay a nominal fee, or maybe just give a valid credit card number, as a means of age verification.

We are infact looking at a mature forum but at this point it has not been determined if it is to be paid or not....

How do "rumors" get spread when the information was stuck at the top of Other for days?

While the nudie stuff is not really my thing, I do enjoy some of the other mature things (jokes, etc.). Would those be relegated to the new forum as well?

I think it would depend on the specific content of the specific thread.

I'm guessing Geoff's goal is to make Other (Life in the new set up) clean for those under 18 and those viewing at work. So I'd guess any jokes not appropriate for those under 18, or for the workplace, would be relegated to the new forum.

I'm sure Geoff will hold discussions on this type of stuff as he gets more solid plans for what he wants to do. Or at the least will discuss it with all the mods.

My prediction, if a new mature forum becomes reality over half the current others will spend most of their time there.

Does anyone have any hard numbers on how many of the Other forum posters are actually under 18? How many teenagers are hardcore DVD addicts?

Are you really protecting anyone by doing this?

Seems to me that most of the so-called "mature" threads are posted by that same age group you're seeking to "protect."

Geoff's protecting his ass...which is over 18, true.

We don't need statistics on a number. We do know for sure that a certain number are under 18 of course. In fact, we know we get people under the age of 14. At least one poster proclaimed he was 12 IIRC.

Note, it's not only protecting those users from the horrors that they might see. It's protecting our own users from family members and/or work people from confusing why they come to this forum. In some cases, employment places may review content and decide this is not acceptable. That will be better in a separate forum.

We are also trying to protect the site and the owner from potential issues involving ALLOWING minors to view material that is mature. We do not have the US federal COPPA restrictions in on this site in that we did not require everyone to state that they are over 18 when they registered. Sure, it may be a rare thing, but we have to do due dilligence in covering ourselves legally. The forums and the site are a real asset that require common sense protection from law suits.

Lastly, I disagree on the age of the posters being under age 18. A quick sampling will show that this is not correct.

We do know that there are people who lurk in other. It's possible that there are plenty of minors who lurk in mature threads.

Having a separate Mature Forum with age verification is fine with me, but I would not pay for access. After all, there are plenty of other sites where you can get pr0n for free. I know that Geoff needs to pay for the bandwidth that it will take up, but paying access to a Mature Forum isn't for me, personally. But, I'd gladly buy something if we had an Other Forum Bake Sale.

Just a couple of ideas for the Mature forum:
1. Turn off the language filters;
2. Still warn people of nude pictures, possibly with a capital "NP" in the title (e.g. "Who is this actress? NP")

Also, I like the idea of a female moderator as one of the moderators for the forum.

I agree. Put the german DJs back in the otter.

No nudity = not mature.

Here's the link to the new MATURE forum:
http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/forumdi...?s=&forumid=32

Also the DJ thread is definately a 'babe drool' thread. where the discussion is on the mature side.

Of course, those in the workplace will now not venture into the mature forum. However, many of the threads that go into the mature forum are not mature. If someone posts a Leeann Tweeden pic of her in a bikini, that now goes in the mature forum. Yes people drool over it, but is it really mature? 14 year olds can easily find these pics anywhere without age verification. Is it something that can be easily avoided in the other forum? Of course. Don't click on the thread.

The thing is, the creation of the Mature Forum was done for various reasons, not just one. Yes we now can have threads/images deemed too hot for work or minors now in one forum.

But we can also have threads that are the typical "babe threads" in there. We have had numerous complaints in the past about the presense of those threads in Other. So relocating those threads to Mature is more about how they fit into the make up of that forum, and not about protecting minors from seeing a pic of a girl in a bikini.

just a comment...
That's very understandable.. but the same goes for mature topic threads, like personal advice threads about other otters, or "what do you say to a one night stand right after" and such that I enjoyed reading/posting in the past. Its gonna be hard for me to view those mainly due to the mature ads that are at the top of the page. I guess we are just S.O.L. oh well.

That should definitely help lower the bandwidth usage considering how many views threads like the German DJs ones got in Other.
