The several times that I opened up one of those threads, I just saw something cut and paste into the thread with a brief summary and the question: "comments?"

I ignore all of those threads now. I have no problems with Amos outside of these threads, but the volume of these thoughtless threads is annoying.

The Antipodean 04-09-02 05:51 PM

As long as we're discussing this same poster I have to say I'm tired to see the endless review threads started by him about totally bizarre movies -- Lanford Wilson's Fifth of July (Broadway Theatre Archive); L.A.P.D. Starring Michael Madsen & Dennis Hooper; Victim of Love starring Pierce Brosnan and Virginia Madsen -- just to name a few of the MANY threads on the front page of the forum right now. It's almost as if he's picking random movies out of Leonard Maltin's video guide or a catalog or something. This is the same guy always going on about a lack of independent and foreign films in his hometown and yet he wants reviews of this bottom of the barrel Cinemax original movies type junk like this. I mean, I don't want to say people shouldn't post what they want but it's annoying to have to filter through junk threads to get to reviews of movies someone may actually be INTERESTED in. (And to be fair he does have threads on movies I've heard of like "Joy Ride" and "K-Pax.") End of venting.

2 more posted right after another, which are essentially cookie-cutter threads with his questions and of obscure titles as well. I wonder if he even expects answers to these threads or if he is just posting for the heck of it. I mean, if you're going to start a thread, don't copy and paste the original post!

gcribbs 04-10-02 12:43 AM

I hope the threads are just ended. i live near Vacaville and trust me nothing much happens in that town to warrant one thread a week.

I make a point to just avoid them myself which i will continue to do if it is decided to leave it be.

Since I do not go into reviews much I really can not say much. However if the posts are just cut and paste maybe something needs to be done about that also.

You're right.

Hello, Randy? Geoff? Blade? X? Anyone?

AndyCapps 04-10-02 06:29 PM

I don't see a problem with his recent posts in Other. I have seen some that deal with a topic already being discussed, and I've merged those with the original thread. Are you wanting us to close anything that's "ripped from today's headlines"?

If you're annoyed by them, treat them in the way this one has been treated http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...hreadid=198762

It's no fun to start threads that no one ever responds to.

GeoffK 04-10-02 06:29 PM

Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention. I'll address it with Aaron Amos.

Andy, thanks for your response. While normally I'd be inclined to just ignore these threads, it's very hard to when there are 6 or 7 of them monopolizing the forum. I have no problem with him posting those, as some of them do get a good response. My problem is when he posts 5 or 6 consecutively, within a 10 or 15 minute time period.

The other problem is that he posts these threads, and often doesn't respond. It's sort of like a "post it, and forget about it" mentality.

 @ your "ripped from the headlines" comment. :D

In all fairness, Aaron posts the letters to spark discussion and then posts his own comments about them.

While I don't personally read all his letters, I do read most and are frankly more stimulating than some of the other drivel that floats through the forum.

I've never opened one either...they just don't interest me, I just don't care what the Letters to the Editor said.

Well, I suppose his letters are posted to try and spark discussion, but he rarely posts his own comments on them. Usually he'll just say something like "Thoughts/feelings?"

Awfully similar to his DVD Reviews thread posts where he just asks the same questions for every movie, copied-and-pasted.

suziq999 04-12-02 11:46 AM

I can't believe how mean the comments are in here. I also can't believe moderators post in here without addressing it. :(

Is there some sort of board regulation that prohibits the creation of a thread without putting forth your own viewpoint?

Obviously they do a pretty good job of sparking debate and discussion, as several of his letters to the editor threads incorporate multiple pages.

We have had discussions on this topic among all of the mods and admins on more than one occasion. Do you think we should do something about it? How should we address it?

As far as I know, Aaron has been notified more than once about the amounts of threads that he creates. Has he slowed down?

To answer your question, no there is no board regulation. But we must be looking at different Letters to the Editors threads. I'm talking about the ones that get posted, no one posts to, there is no discussion and no effort to make a discussion has been made. When that happens, it's like posting an article from a newspaper. My reaction is....uh, okay.....but that doesn't make for a thread.

I haven't seen one that has went on for multiple pages or sparked debate and discussion, but I imagine that Aaron has to do a better job choosing which ones to post, so that the ones he post spark an interesting discussion and are not just a post clogging up the board.

You make an assumption about this being addressed or not. Note Geoff's response above your's also. It has been addressed, we just forgot to consult everyone. :)

P.S. For the most part, anyone can simply not click on those threads and they fall and die. Just like some people don't click on a babe thread, or a political thread, or a sports thread.

Any one type of thread that tends to dominate gets looked at by mods. And this has been discussed with Aaron in the past.

suziq999 04-12-02 06:04 PM

I just thought people were making fun of him in this thread, and considering he hasn't posted here, there is nobody to defend him or his actions. If he has been notified of something and doesn't do what a moderator says, then suspend him, don't talk about him behind his back.
Threads were CLOSED because people were making fun of Shaggy and he's not even a member anymore... I don't think its right to criticize someone so openly who is STILL a member.
my gripe has nothing to do with anything that has happened behind closed doors or the thread itself... it only merits on the statements that are contained in this thread.

That's just me and my opinion though. <shrugs>

RandyC 04-12-02 06:26 PM

OH sorry, I misread your meaning. NOw I see what you are saying.

I was taken aback when I first read it... but, see....I highly doubt he reads any other threads. Really.

We could dance around who we are talking about, but everyone knows that this issue is about one poster and his posts. And the truth is, it's not about him, but about his posts, if that makes sense.

Thanks for clarifying. I will try to read slower. :)

Second apology. I missed the post above that I edited. Whether he reads or not, I would not want to allow a personal attack.

GeoffK 04-12-02 08:58 PM

I am going to close this puppy.
