searching for old threads

with people constantly asking the same questions and creating threads that have already been created, it seems like people just don't want to bother searching for old threads. many of them might not even really know exactly how to do it. how easy would it be to put a general thread search field on the page, right underneath the price search field on the right of the page? it could do a general search through all forums, any date and search the entire thread. advanced searches could still be done through the regular search menu.

i think some people are just too lazy to click on search, then fill out the form, then click a couple menus and buttons. maybe having it right there in front of them would help out a bit. it would certainly be nice to have, even for someone like myself who does use the search menu in it's current form. it'd probably get used more than the price search field.

I don't know how difficult this would be to change, but I would like to see a search like you describe too. I do a fair amount of searching, probably half of it on a modem, so I'd like it because it would save me the time spent loading the search page.

lately when I search I don't get results older than jan 1, 2002
there's been a few times when I've looked for stuff I posted because it would fit in a current thread too

There's actually a search similar to this at the bottom of every thread list page. It will do an any date thread content search of the forum you are in. Moving it to the top of the page might be doable though, and a good idea.

The Main forum and Other forum are the busiest forums here and because of the volume of threads and the scarcity of server resources, they are "pruned" back every once in a while. That's probably why you're seeing date limited results.

i never even noticed that before. moving it up over the forum jump menu bar and letting people know it exists would probably be a good idea. also expanding it's function so that it searches ALL forums and not just the current one would be helpful. that way you wouldn't ned to hop around to different forums just to do a search.
