please show me a thread where I flaunt my post count..
i believe you talk about it much more then I do.

my point was just that its a pretty silly idea.. if the idea is to take the emphasis off the post count, its kindof countering that when you punish someone by deducting from it, which of course brings much more attention to it.. and surely would be turned into a game.

the main point is that the large majority of the regulars dont do theis kindof stuff. Im sure most would be against that idea. and since it only happens a few times a month and is quickly handled by the mods, I cant see why such a big deal should be made..
we can start putting together a whole list of activities that people feel should result in suspensions rather then just thread closing.. but then, there wouldnt be many people left to post.

You're right about that. You don't flaunt it.

Well, I doubt you care too much (or so it seems by the sentiment there) but it seems that people who do this crap over and over (which is quite a few of the "otters") just give more work to the mods. How would you enjoy the thankless job being compounded with having to put up with people who wantonly disobey rather simple policies?

I say make the punishment a little harder and people will think twice about it. Right now, I could do any number of things and only get a closed thread. I would know what I'm doing when I do it, but if it's just a thread being locked what the heck do I care?
I say don't sweat the little stuff.

It still amazes me that post counts are a big deal to some people. What does it matter if joe blow has a post count of 10k and little susie has a post count of 1k. This is the internet people, not real life.

Agreed that majority of regulars don't do this kind of stuff. However, it is mostly the high posters (which are regulars) that do flaunt it... They, of all people, should know to abide by rules that everyone else has to! (this is not the NFL, MLB, or NBA )

i disagree

on the rare times I have seen someone start a thread about a post count lately..

its been to say, Ive hit 1000.. Im an addict.. etc..

these are low post count numbers..

you dont see many people starting threads to say they are in the hall of fame, or have become a legend

and you dont see people starting threads to say they just went over 20,000 total posts

I think that your extremely high post count has eroded your logic.

Anyone with 1K posts is a VERY high poster. They are in the minority of this community. Anyone who has posted 1K times or more ought to have learned what is appropriate and what is not.

I agree with you on "starting" threads, but talking about post count within threads is mostly the high posters (yourself "not" included!!)

Like I have said before I don't really care what people do (and I really don't care about post count posts), as long as the rules are enforced across the board....

personally, the much more annoying posts are the ones directed specifically at people for something that would have been more appropriate for e-mail and contributes nothing to the forum at all.

however, unlike padding/post threads, I see why people do this since there doesn't seem to be any obvious punishment for it...

A preface: Post-counts are one of the silliest things to be proud of that I can think of.

IMO, threads that pertain to status/postcount should be deleted. They serve zero purpose but to encourage and continue padding. The thread should not clutter the forum, and a warning email should be sent to the starter. Also, they "hey so-and-so" threads should be deleted, with an emailed warning.

If the mods are over-taxed......get more mods. There are any number of people that would be happy to do it.

With that said, it's still a great forum. I read my college sports boards, and wish X, Dead, and Randy could attack it like the Super-friends.

There is a point were a congrats should be fine. I for one did one yesterday for Twikoff.

If he was tossing his post count around all the time I would not have done it. But when its something like 10K or 20K and the person is not just padding his way to get this level it should be fine. I understand that we cant draw a gray line so we have the rules we have.

Not a big issue if you ask me!

I don't get this post count praising thing.

If anything, I feel like a huge god damn dork everytime I see that I'm over 13,000 posts. The last thing I want to do is want to bring up that I'm a DVDTALK LEGEND in any of my posts, nor do I want to mention that I am NUMBER 10 on the list for most posts ever on this board. Why would I want to do that?

I assume that someone wants to be praised for having more contact with a blue screen than with the people around him. However, I think that Alyoshka is overreacting. I do not see as very many pad threads when I look around the Other Forum. The most common ones I see now are the responses, which could be construed as appreciation.

Anyone who thinks that the Other hasn't become a huge pad farm is clearly in a different forum than I. However, that is a different topic. I just don't like people praising their padding/post counts/etc. Post counts are meaningless.

ok.. so for now on.. the 1 or 2 times it happens a month (at most)

we will publicly chastise that person..
then beat them with a garden hose

but I think a suspension is over the edge for such a minor thing

yes, I think deleting the thread when it is just padding will suffice.

I'm not sure what would constitute flaunting of padding. Sure there are some threads that seem like padding to me but that may be because i'm not in on the joke. Some threads appear to have no meaning whatsoever and have nothing but smilies in the post but there is usually a lot more there than meets the eye.

As for suspending for that, i think that may be a little extreme. A locking of a thread would suffice IMO. Besides that Alyoshka if a thread offends you and in your opinion seems to be a padfest don't bother reading it. If the other forum in general offends you don't bother going there.

Please!, it is not even close to as bad as it used to be before geoff got rid of the post counter. I think your overreacting just a tad bit to much here.

Yes, before Geoff's policy it was a NIGHTMARE in every way. People easily posting 100-200x's a day. Then it got GREAT for awhile. Now it's slowly returning to how it was before the temporary crackdown. It's not an overaction - just an objective look at the situation.

from the front page right now:

Will You Support a Big Mac Attack

How far do YOU read into DVD Talk Threads

Sometimes it's sparce but it's often plentiful. As I already stated - this isn't about the PADDING so much. I think we've discussed this topic enough though.

Perhaps a mod could throw a lock on this?
