What are the chances of getting avatars?

Suggestion: maybe make them available to registered users once they reach a certain status?

I voted no

It's a cool idea but there are a lot of modem users, and the avatars would just suck up bandwidth and make the load time unnecessarily slow.

Wasn't Geoff having problems with Bandwith, wouldn't this hurt it more.

Way too easy to get really annoying avatars, imo.

I'm on a 56k and don't really notice a difference in page loading time on boards that use avatars. I have a feeling it will never happen here because it would greatly increase the amount of bandwidth on a site like this.

Here's an idea... offer it as a perk, people donate a certain amount per year, maybe $20 and get an avatar.

That's an interesting idea, actually.

I voted no. Too much bandwidth.

Also voted against. I'd even get rid of them fool smilies.

That's a sure way to encourage padding.

They're a pointless waste of Geoff's bandwidth, so I voted "No."

I should have clarified, even though it sounded like I'm for it in my post above, I don't like avatars and would rather not see them here (and I don't think we will anyway).

I do let people use them on my board but only if they use a picture of themselves. I have no desire to scroll through a bunch of cartoon characters, animated images, etc.

cartoons and animations are horrible by nature. If that became a constant part of dvdtalk, i wouldn't be. I know Geoff, like you, would probably never allow that to happen though. Thankfully!
