Only those who don't want their presence known will hide it, including the mods. If indeed many people turn off the feature, then you would be right, it becomes meaningless.
The advantage of the feature is you can private message (PM) someone if they are online and know they will get it. We don't have PM enabled due to bandwidth. Here it is more of a value to a stalker....but if your stalker turns it off...oh well.

i believe that most regulars will leave it on
and thats all that really matters, isnt it?
it would be nice to know when certain regulars are around
although.. whether Im at home or work.. I always have a browser on dvdtalk.. so unless it times out.. I pretty much will always show up as being online
