That's not what he said - he laid most of the blame on the mod who closed the thread and on Randy for not sending his email sooner. He accepts only partial blame for not "counting to 10 before reacting." The fact that he claims all this experience on the net, including being a mod in his own right, makes it worse, IMO. He should have known better.

Of course I've done stupid things in my life, and I have always accepted the consequences and moved on.

He also said that he felt he was wronged. He also said that he made an assumption. He came forward and admitted his error. He has accepted the consequences and will be moving on. He also felt the need to explain himself and why he reacted the way he did. Now unless I misunderstood what he said at the end of one of his paragraphs, he would apologize to the mod, if he knew who it was. If I am misunderstanding him, then I feel he should apologize for his statements.

I am defending him because he's a friend and I introduced him to DVD Talk and feel a certain responsibility in not making sure he understood the environment here.

Personally, speaking as a Christian, I wasn't too effected by his original comments, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I only occasionally glanced at the thread so maybe I missed some of the stronger language but I didn't really read anything there I haven't read here before. It also wasn't clear whether or not he was the one that caused the thread to be closed in the first place, which is why I made the recommendation here. I do agree though his repeated registrations and attacks were getting out of line and earned the banned status

Well you have read enough of my posts to know I am not a Christian either and they say I will have the same destiny. I don't detest them. I try to be reasonable. If I have a door available, I say "Thank you, but I'm really not interested" and shut the door. If I can't conveniently escape, I may get irritated and try to figure out exactly what they believe and challenge it to the best of my ability. (Admission of guilt: there is one sect I do this to on almost a knee-jerk basis - me bad, as younger folk say).

My goal: You get a smug feeling of self-righteouness if you can "out-decent" them, since their religion teaches them to be decent and kind to all people. As confessed above, I don't always manage to.

Perhaps more to the point of your post, I was composing my message at the time he made his last post and did not see it. If he better understands the limits we try to impose on ourselves here and is willing to live within them, I could give another chance, if that is the general sentiment of the group. His prior posts frankly gave me a "he just doesn't get it" impression.

Thanks all the discussion, I'm outta here though. I just wanted to say though I think all the mods (and Geoff of course ) do a great job w/ the forum here. I was just offering a suggestion that might help us avoid this type of situation in the future. As usual though the final decision on this matter is up to whatever you decide...

Old dude - I have many christian friends and although I don't share their beliefs, I do believe in god. However, because this is a belief I try not to impose it on others. I don't treat it as though it's a fact. If you're referring to JW, I hate getting a knock on my door at 9 am on a Saturday and find it highly frustrating.

I think he definitely has a much better understanding of how things work here. However, it's a little late. He's been banned and I understand the whyfor. The only thing that bothers me, is it was a first time offense and I have seen others commit repeated offenses, be warned, then suspended and then banned. Also, I've seen a few folks let back here after a ban. Some it works out for and they may still be here and others repeat the offense and get rebanned for good. It just appears as though not everyone is treated the same. I could be wrong and if so, one of the mods will point this out to me.

If they were to reconsider the ban, it would be with the upfront warning that this type of posting is not cool and an apology to the mod in question.

nemein - thanks for your input on this. I do understand and support the mods decision, but after having exchanges with most of them, we don't always agree. So, we agree to disagree and move on.

Personally i think no one closes a thread better than Randyc. He usually does it with humor.

since his last post in that thread was targeted at me, i'll jump in. I wasn't offended by it, i was actually amused. This "mensa-qualifying" iq dude thought it arrogant for people to think their beliefs are right while others are wrong, but thought it not arrogant to call other's beliefs assinine.

I think the mod who closes it should post so if the person feels the need to discuss it, they can <b>email</b> the mod in question

I used to do this all the time back in the long long ago ... when I was a mod. I hated to bump really offensive threads but needed to post an explanation. Guess I should have copyrighted the process.

As for the thread crapping/trolling in TV Talk ... we weren't even discussing Riker in that thread, and up pops this big animated BANNED gif. I don't know what word you want to assign to that behavior, but it seems uncalled for in my opinion. At the time, Riker was only on "suspended" status. Taunting him (and any of his friends/supporters) in TV Talk of all places is not appropriate.

You know lets not go into the riker deal any more it is well expeined on both sides but NEMEIN's post is a good idea.

I had one locked last week and though "I wonder why" I dont even remember what it was but I think a little not like "this is getting a bit to hot" or "mr X is out of line" would be best.

It helps to understand were the line is especially with all the new mods we have its tough to know how each will react to a given post.

Think how many times we see post like "why was this thread locked".

I think this is a good idea.

Regardless of whether or not an explanation is given for closing a thread, creating a post asking why it was closed in which you insult the moderator in question is absolutely not the way to do it.

Moreover, after already being put on suspension, breaking the rules again by creating another account is an automatic ban. This really should not be a surprise to anyone, regardless of how long they've been a member. Because of how obvious this is, when you do it, it really is a ban that is hardly ever reconsidered.

As noted above, we make a good faith effort to be as explanatory as we can. Sometimes it's not enough, but usually it is. When it is not, the appropriate response is to email moderators and/or moderator*s to get more information. Geoff and all the moderators are always open to reasonable arguements via email.

Finally, I wanted to reemphasize that the thread that started all of this was not closed because of content, but rather because of an attack on Riker.

I believe that this thread has been played out and leaving it open is only going to be an invitation to take more needless swipes at Riker. If you feel differently, please feel free to email me.
