Link to post number

I did a quick scan and couldn't find an example.

I have a workaround hack where I append this:

&perpage=11&pagenumber=2

to the link where the perpage is the number of posts before the post I want to link to.

I'd like to get the correct syntax to just link to the specific post number. I"m sure it's simple, but I tried &post= and &postnumber= but they don't work.

Thanks in advance!

OK, here's one way to do it.

Move your mouse over the 'edit' or 'quote' buttons for the post you want to link to (or 'report this post to a moderator' or 'IP: logged'. Look for the 'postid' in the URL that text/image links to.

Append the following to the URL of the thread:

#postpostID

Your post above has a postid of 1314869

The URL of the thread is:
http://dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread....hreadid=128215

and you'd append:
#post1314869
to that.

So, the final result is...

http://dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread....15#post1314869

Hope that helps.

[edit -- Hmmm...that works fine if I copy and paste that, but direct linking doesn't seem to work quite right...]

That works. Except that after you click on the link and a new window opens, if you maximize the new screen (or interrupt it in any other way), then it will not take you to the post. Just let it load completely before doing anything.

Try this link:

Does it take you to my post in the Breakfast thread? It works fine for me ... in IE 5.50.4522.1800 and Netscape 4.76.

There's not anything different substantively about the URL you provided than the one I used to test above.

IE 5.00.2614.3500 seems to want to skip one post too early in both cases. They both work as intended in Netscape 4.08.

This works on the lastest betas of both browsers. The only difference is IE puts it at the top of the page, while Netscape puts it in the center.

That's cool...seems to work for everyone but me.

Happy to have saved the day again!
