New Forum Software questions...?

"We fear change" -Garth Algar

This might be a small rant, But does it seem like the thread listing are really spaced out? Used to be i could fit maybe 20-25 thread titles on my screen and now they seem so spaced out i can only fit maybe 10-15?

I also really dislike this software. I understand if you're having problems with the old software, but I'm sure if you restrict Jack-bot's access a little - some load issues will go away. Actually - I just think change is a mistake. Everyone is happy with the old software. Last time the software changed, we lost like a day's worth of posts... hope that doesn't happen again. In the end though - if it's too much trouble and you simply can't keep the old software, then I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

Trigger: Could you elaborate on why you dislike this version of the software so much?

Okay Geoff said in a different thread he wants to use the new software, But make it act and look and behave as much like the old software as possible. I like this idea, if it can be tweaked to do so..

My issues, And they are mosly just nitpicky stuff:

-The table sizes. Like i mentioned in the first post, it makes everything looks spread out too much! I feel like my screen is 800x600 when i look at it.

-The headings are now adding a subcategory which is kind of irrelevant i.e. "DVD Talk Forum > Feedback > Forum Feedback & Suggestions > New Forum Software questions...?" instead of just "DVD Talk Forum > Forum Feedback & Suggestions > New Forum Software questions...?"

Also is it just me or does the page load a little buggy? Sometimes the table arrangement will be okay, then the next time i load up, it'll all be centered and have huge gaps??

But there are benefits. The formatting of posts is a nice feature. And the "report post to mod" feature is nice too and ill help squash stupid posts quickly. I've used it once already

I think it woudl be nice if we could move the "edit post" and quote buttons back over, while maybe eliminatig some of the buttons like WWW or email, cause those are readily avaiable jsut one click away in the users profile. But thats probably an opinion only i have. Also, over under the user name, where post count used to be, it s shoing the location field. Most of us leave that blank anyway, so why bother?

Lastly, Dont' take any of this as negative-criticism. Just trying to help out.

Just another note, I love the new edited message tag. It's more discreet. AND, This hardly has anything to do with the new software, but I'm in favor of restricting the signature's down to 2 or 3 lines. I think some of them are wayyyy to long.

</small>So do I, but you can obliterate them from view entirely via the control panel: just click <A HREF="http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/member.php?s=&action=editoptions" TARGET="_blank">here</a> and scroll down to the first radio button in the <i>Thread View Options</i> section.

All or nothing but them's the breaks!!

That "report thread" feature....

.... the message that comes up indicates that reports can only be made in that manner for a few set reasons:<blockquote><i>"This is ONLY to be used to report spam, advertising messages, and problematic (harassment, fighting, or rude) posts."</i></blockquote>Probably a silly question, but does that mean one shouldn't use the function for notifying any other matters i.e. is it for the main priorities and any, less pressing matters, can go via normal email?

I've noticed the extra spacing too. I think it is because on the "last post" column it has the date and who posted it on separate lines. With the old version of the software, I don't think the last person to post was listed on the thread page.

Another question, if the "test" is sucessful, will those default purple buttons be replaced? They don't fit in too well with the blue color scheme

I think it's more logical having the POST-specific buttons physically separated from the POSTER-specific buttons.

The Location field was a feature of the old UBB software. Many of us liked that feature, and I am glad for its return.

Help! How do I change the times I see to Pacific time? Since the change they're all in Eastern time. Not that there's anything wrong with that...but I'm West Coast!

Click the "user cp" button at the top. Click on the "Edit Options" section. Towards the bottom, there is a place to change your "Time Offset"

Thanks.

P.S. Wish I was still on Hawaii time (went to college at U of H).
