Do we have to run ads for Porn DVD's up the top left?

I'm a little concerned about kids etc clicking on them and ending up at sites that sell adult material.

I think that is what folk were talking about on the thread entitled "Yow! Those ARE Hot DVDs!".

To summarise: Geoff tries to keep the ads to US night-time. The server can't deal with international night time.

Er.... that's it.

What's the youngest age of any DVDTalk member? Geoff? You have any demographics about the viewers here?

I'm well aware of the condition of the market and the fact Geoff cannot keep DVDtalk running on thin air.

Thanks.

I only run 23 sites down here and while every single one of them has spots and banners, none of them have any advertisments for porn on them.

I am just concerned about young people clicking on them.

I don't think it should be our or Geoff's responsibility to protect children from the dangers of porn. If a child's parents don't want him on this site, it should be their responsibility to monitor it.

I totally agree. So take off the ban on swears and the limitations on adult pictures. One or the other, kid friendly or adult oriented, picking and choosing is lame and gives you neither.

Hey Gallant, quick question for ya. This is in no way intended as an attack of any sort. Just curious champ.

Do you have any kids of your own?

If I'm overstepping the mark in any way please don't reply.

Thanks.

Hi Fhrx,

First let me apologize to Geoff. This is a beaten horse and we actually went through this a while ago, however I don't recall the result.

Anyway, I don't have kids. But if I did, I wouldn't want this browsing this web site. You see, we are talking on two different levels. You think this place should be more kid friendly, while I think it should be either kid friendly or adult friendly, not some sort of MPAA PG-13, half-ass mixture of both.

Right now this place isn't kid friendly. It has porno links, and adult conversation, trolling, and adult situations. None of the forums here are suitable for children. Nor is the link to Fivestardvd.com nor the Hot DVDs. For example:
WARNING THE FOLLOWING LINK IS EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE, DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DON'T LIKE PORN, IT IS AN EXAMPLE ONLY.

If you go to Fivestardvd.com, the following page was found after only three clicks into the web site: http://www.fivestardvd.com/item.asp?...eeders2&view=3

But you see, I think Geoff has every right to have porno here. He needs to pay the bills. But if he does, then it negates the fact this place is trying to be kid friendly, doesn't it? So this place isn't kid friendly... OK. But then again, it's not all that adult friendly either. Adult pictures have been cracked down on, and you can't say words like **** even if it's in the title of a movie like ****ing Åmål.

So it's really neither kid nor adult friendly. Even teenagers like FREE are immune to that sort of stuff. I'd imagine most young people here are teens who have been and are exposed to more gratuitous language and sex than ever before.

Arrgh. I dunno. I don't like busting Geoff's balls about this all the time, but it does bug me.

So my final thought is this:

I really wouldn't mind if Geoff went completely for kids or completely for adults, but I don't care for the in-between version.

PS. If it's ironic that I'm arguing about making the forum more mature after I blasted the dirty topics, my solution to that is a sex discussion forum here where we can keep those isolated to one place.

This is a moot point. How many children are interested in dvd's? The youngest member I've noticed that has stated their age was 15. People this age are going to look at porn one way or the other. The fact is that DVD's are primarily an adult market, so this site should be aimed at adults. Besides Geoff has taken measures to make this site as kid friendly as possible. All the ads are relatively tame, and anyone who clicks on them knows what kind of site they are going to. If a "kid" clicks on one of the ads, they are old enough to be interested in porn.

You make some good points there Gallant. As do you Josh.

And as you've also said, this subject is a little old so we'll let it die.

Thanks for your comments people. I appreciate them!

Stay cool!

From what I can tell, I'm the youngest here. 15 years old! Don't need to BUY the porn when I can LimeWire it.

I didn't know this thread had been started. I was seeing porn at 11AM EST today and all day, so it's not just at night US time

I must also add that I have no problems with porn, or ads. I just think there is possible hypocrisy

Kids on the internet know exactly where to get porn and no one would be influenced by the ad up in the upper left of a dvdtalk screen.

I was interested in sex when I was four or five but I didn't know it had such a variety of names.

GK had a poll in 1999 about an adult forum and the nays won on that day. Later, he slid it in unannounced. This is his dive and he doesn't need anyone's approval for anything he decides to do with it.

That being said, this is no place for kids, if you are trying to avoid sex and violence. Those are tools of the trade in the movie industry and everyone knows it, including the kids, who probably can dig up some real smut if they were left alone for a minute or two. I would have.

Where is Geoff's adult forum? Or are you simply talking about links to other adult-oriented sites? I am confused!

Sorry, I wasn't clear about that

You may have just missed that member poll as you didn't come aboard until October of 1999. I believe it was based on the number of people who actually posted yea or nay on the idea in a post of their own. Those were simpler days.

I don't keep track of the smut shops so I don't know what the current links are. Back then, shortly after an adult forum was defeated, a link to "Diva Dee" or something like that, was established and another hue and cry swept over the other forum. At one point Geoff described DivaDee as being a "classy" adult etailer and that begged the question of what makes one adult store classier than another.

But, you are correct, TALK does not have an adult forum, just the link(s).
