Large Collection of Never Opened DVDs to Sell

Hi, I'm new here, not sure if this is okay to post or not - please let me know.
My dad passed away and I have been left with his massive DVD collection. I have thousands of DVDs, all in excellent condition, most of which have never been opened, including many box sets. I'm looking for some guidance as to the best way to liquidate the collection outside of folks that want to pay far less than what I know they are worth. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If you have lots of time, energy and a place to store them, eBay is probably your best bet to get a good price. On the downside it takes knowledge and research to get a feel for what titles are worth your time and effort and what isn't.

If you have to get rid of them quickly, craigslist and/or Facebook Marketplace are the best bets.

I'd probably focus on the box sets first and check their values on eBay. Individual DVDs can still be valuable but a majority of your DVDs are probably worth very little. A seasoned collector would likely cherry pick the out of print, rare DVDs and sell the rest in big themed lots.

If you have a place where they're listed, post a link in the DVD Exchange forum and see if anyone is interested in singles or lots. Be sure to post prices and shipping.

Unfortunately most of them are probably worth pennies on the dollar, unless there are a lot of out-of-print or cult horror or offbeat films in the collection. Even sealed, the common titles won't be worth very much; perhaps 5 cents on the dollar. Some of the boxsets could be worth selling individually, but it will take a TON of time and effort, and you need to figure out if it's worth your sanity and frustration, for a few more dollars. Selling things on Ebay carries risks of deadbeats, fraud, etc. And don't forget, Ebay will take huge chunks out of whatever you make, between 20 and 25% net, with their awful and increasing fees. Further, please don't forget that the added burden of Ebay's sending IRS 1099s of all sales over $600 in 2022 to the IRS. These sales will be taxed at your marginal ordinary income tax rate for your income tax bracket.

So, in the end, a lot of effort and possible disappointment for a few dollars.

Hey, you never know. Someone might be looking for something he has and is willing to pay more than "just pennies" for it.

I've been hearing horror stories about Ebay lately though...

I think many believe eBay isn't the best venue anymore. Places like Mercari and Facebook Marketplace may very well be better options these days.

^ I've never heard of Mercari before. Is it well known enough to get the kind of exposure most people are hoping for?

I see Mercari is an iOS and Android app. Lifewire has an article devoted to alerting people to scams unscrupulous people perpetrate on Mercari (as well as any other site like it on the internet) and how to protect yourself from the scams:

I bought something on Mercari once, and had a fine time with it (a roaring singular piece of anecdotal evidence, I know). I got the sense it was more popular outside the US.

It's pretty popular in the larger urban and suburban areas of America.
