Just as a point of clarification, one film CAN fill multiple slots in the checklist--is this correct assumption?
For instance, Amarcord could be used for the 1970s in decades, Italy in countries, Italian in languages, Fellini in directors, comedy (or drama) in genres, and spine #s 1-100 in Criterion spine numbers...right? I just want to make sure before I even really contemplate attempting the checklist. |

Do any of these films Stand Out as not working for this challenge?

I know that The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari has been issued on disc by Kino Lorber and has streamed on the Criterion Channel so it's covered by either of those alone. Aside from that, though, I'm not familiar with most of the titles. I looked up Dom Hemingway since I recognized it and saw it was distributed by Fox Searchlight. Their films can sometimes end up being full-on mainstream, which is why they aren't on the safe list. I pulled up the full Fox Searchlight list on IMDb and scrolled through, cross-referencing your list with that. That took me fifteen minutes. Dom Hemingway ended up being the only one I saw. I can't be spending fifteen minutes to cross-reference every movie on a list that long. Just from skimming, it looks like a lot of your list looks more "indie" than "art-house." The problem is that "Indie" has become a far more nebulous term than it once was, and most of your list are movies that have been made recently as it's become murkier. Take New Line Cinema. When they started, they were picking up distribution rights for foreign films and independently produced things like John Waters' films. They distributed Female Trouble, and later co-produced Polyester--both of which are in the Criterion Collection. Then they hit big with A Nightmare on Elm Street in '84 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in '90. But John Waters passes the sniff test for an indie/art-house challenge and I don't think many would agree that Freddy or the Turtles do, despite both being produced by New Line while they were still independent. |

Safe List
>Any movie made available by the following distributors is classified as "safe" for this challenge, even if it should be a mainstream production. You are not required to watch their edition.< I went through the Kino Lorber list and found these films that I have: Spoiler:
So there's plenty I can watch. But do any of those really fit the challenge? Maybe two or three. |
Re: Discussion Thread: Revamping September Challenge!
Just the fact that Kino Lorber releases are included open this a huge amount. That, alone, was enough for me to participate this year.

So there's plenty I can watch. But do any of those really fit the challenge? Maybe two or three. Scroll through your discs and see what else you have that might fit any of the above themes. For instance, from the Directed by Richard Lester collection, I see A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forumand The Knack... And How to Get It. If you happen to have any of his other eligible films, great. Even if not, you've got a built-in double feature right there. You can see from the collections I cited that their themes have been kinda niche. Who'd have expected one built around scores by Ennio Morricone? (They've also done one by Quincy Jones scores.) Or produced by Val Lewton? Western Noir? And if you think that's niche, there was "Saul Bass Turns 100": films whose main title sequences were assembled by Bass. Here are just some off-the-cuff/by no means comprehensive themes to consider:

Re: Discussion Thread: Revamping September Challenge!
I have a slight issue with this checklist item from the Criterion Spine # list:
--- Spine #'s 1101-1200 - Since none of these films are slated to be released until after the challenge is over, could it be removed for this year and added back next year, once there are at least a few discs in this range to view? I know that the five films announced in this range of spine numbers are available from other sources, but until there are actual Criterion discs out with those spine numbers, I feel that they should be left off. It's just a suggestion. EDITED TO ADD: Travis, you wouldn't happen to have a list of films that take place in September lying around, would you? I can't seem to find a reliable one on the Web anywhere. |

I would think any foreign language films and documentaries would automatically qualify for this challenge.

I would think so, too. And, because the only place that you'd see most of them these days would be in an art house theater, I think that all silent films would align with the parameters of the challenge as well.

Re: Discussion Thread: Revamping September Challenge!
I've encountered a dilemma: My 12 year old Blu-ray player can't read any of the discs in the Ingmar Bergman's Cinema box set! I could stream the content from the Channel until I get a replacement player, but it would bug me not to watch my actual discs.

Re: Discussion Thread: Revamping September Challenge!
Sar far I've watched:
1. Sebastiane (1976). Derek Jarman directing softcore gay porn disguised as a film about faith, but really it's an excuse to show naked men cavorting with one another, so 4 stars from me, obvs. The film also features an early Brian Eno ambient music score. 2. Orlando (1992). Sally Potter's adaption of Virginia Woolf's satire of English lit still resonates today now that transgender people are getting recognition. 3. Il Traditore (2019). A standard Italian crime film, this time a true story about a Mafia informer who helps wreck the Sicilian mob in the 80s. 4. Marat/ Sade (1967). Starring a young Glenda Jackson in her first film, Marat/ Sade is an utterly brilliant adaptation of the RSC stage production and retaining most of the original cast. This really needs to be released on Blu or 4K by Criterion or Kino. |

Re: Discussion Thread: Revamping September Challenge!
Every Tuesday evening, I meet with friends for a Movie Night. Last Tuesday was not my turn to pick the movie so I figured it wouldn't be one that would qualify. However, my friend selected Men & Chicken, a bonkers Danish comedy that I'm glad we watched despite it not really working for me. There were lots of elements that I enjoyed, but I found some story beats super off-putting.
On Wednesday, I finally revisited Alain Resnais' Last Year in Marienbad, a film I watched over a decade ago and remember thinking it was baffling and oh-so-very French. This time around, I really loved it and was compelled to watch another Resnais film so I watched Hiroshima mon amour on the Criterion Channel. It's also wonderful, and I've been thinking about it's themes all day. |
