TV on DVD* The Ninth Season Discussion Thread

Ninth Season of the continuing TV on DVD* Challenge

Ah, January. It's cold, there's very little new content in any entertainment field and most football fans have already figured out that their teams are going nowhere. Is there a better time to hibernate on the couch and gorge on TV shows?

Guidelines/Rules
This challenge begins at Dusk (your time) on Boxing Day, 26 December 2018, and concludes at Dawn (your time), 1 February 2019.
Eligible content is anything originally produced for television broadcast, including television series, mini-series, made-for-TV movies and specials (including, but not limited to, stand-up specials and music performances).
Also eligible are movies that are directly part of the continuity of eligible content. If you are uncertain, please ask in the discussion thread!
This is not a challenge pitting your final view count against anyone else's. You're fighting your own schedule and capacity for gorging on TV content. You are therefore welcome to count your viewing totals however you wish, as it will only matter to you.
Remember also that 1 January overlaps with the Holiday Challenge, so if you've got any Holiday-themed TV content you want to squeeze in, it counts for both challenges on that day.
* The emphasis of this challenge should be to explore the impact that the DVD format has had on how we view TV content, but you are not restricted to the DVD format. You may watch your content on VHS, Blu-ray, over-the-air broadcast, digital download, online streaming; whatever format suits you.

Don't forget to check out the TV Talk sub-forum, where you may very well find other fans of the shows you choose to watch during the challenge!

The List thread will go up some time next week.

If anyone is interested in a new nature series, Blue Planet II was recently added to Netflix.

I plan to re-watch Homicide: Life on the Street and The Wire in 2019 so this will be my start. I also just got Batman: The Animated Series on blu so I got options.

Re: TV on DVD* The Ninth Season Discussion Thread

Sounds good lisadoris. I have a lot I can watch myself. Not really sure if I will focus on any one show, or wing it. I too have the complete series of Batman: TAS. I have some Irwin Allen shows, Knight Rider, Xena, and many other live action shows, and many cartoons too. Might also take the opportunity to finally watch my DVD of Category 6: Day Of Destruction. And for you, Trevor, Godzilla counts, due to the 98 Godzilla having a TV series, and he also made an appearance in Final Wars.

Re: TV on DVD* The Ninth Season Discussion Thread

I still have a decent amount of stuff on the DVR to clear out. The back half of the most recent season of Fear the Walking Dead, the first 8 of the current season of The Walking Dead, and the entire season of American Horror Story: Apocalypse. I intend to try to watch all of those and go back to watching the rest of Seinfeld with my son. We got through 6 seasons very quickly and have taken a fairly long break now. It is about time to finish it up.

I’ve been wanting to revisit GI Joe , so that’s another possibility for me.

I might try to get through all three seasons of Penny Dreadful; watch the second series of Fun at the Funeral Parlour and dip into Round the Twist. Not to mention my usual viewing habits - anime, OTA, etc...

Re: TV on DVD* The Ninth Season Discussion Thread

I keep waffling on what I want to watch. I have so much from which to choose that I frequently develop a block...

Right now in consideration are:

The Fugitive (pick up where I left off a few months back. Starting S2)
The Untouchables
Farscape (I just purchased BR upgrades for this from Hamilton - it's a long time favorite)
Ned and Stacey
Two Guys and a Girl (AKA Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place)
Xena (I think I'm up to S5 on this one - haven't seen it since the original syndicated airings)
Maude (I'm not particularly fond of this one but got it on sale. S3 is next up here)
Perry Mason (Finally start with this one. I've seen them all - just not on DVD)
Bonanza (Watch S1 - I purchased this one out of order so started watching that way)
Rawhide (I'd be starting all over as I picked up the complete series for a song some time back)
Kate and Allie
Andy Griffith S1 (the BR - just purchased mainly for the commercial bits reintegrated into the episodes)

several others...

Since I hit 100 and so will be slowing down on the Holiday Challenge, I've been watching more regular TV lately. So, I guess I have kind of unofficially began my TV Challenge already, kind of a pre Challenge, I guess.

Well, it’s Christmas Eve. I hope everyone is looking forward to starting in a couple days. We had Christmas dinner with my sister yesterday, and she gave me a $25 Amazon gift card. Considering buying a TV show with it, as one of my possibilities.

I’ve been missing Transformers lately, so another show I might work on is continuing working my way through Transformers: Headmasters , since I finished the US series last Cartoon Challenge.

Question for the group: do sporting events count for this challenge? I was gifted the 2005 Chicago White Sox World Series DVDs and would love to re-watch that for this challenge. Oh the days when my team didn't suck.

When Travis ran the Challenge, I asked him the same thing, and he told me that they did. I've kept that ruling going.

I usually watch a DVD of a Minnesota Twins World Series victory every January, drowning my sorrows of the inevitable Minnesota Vikings playoff failure.

Besides that, my monthly checklist, and more progress on my Monk marathon with Jen will fill my January viewing.

I'm going to try to catch some streaming-only shows like Handmaid's Tale, Lost in Space, and Jack Ryan, plus rewatching the last season of Strike Back.

Yeah, my understanding is that anything created for TV broadcast counts. So stay up to watch your local news... BOOM, count it! Sports games are an inefficient way to pad your numbers, though.

And hang in there, lisadoris! Your team has a lot of good prospects, and maybe you'll add Bryce Harper too!

Re: TV on DVD* The Ninth Season Discussion Thread

I hope everyone had a great Christmas. Are you ready for tonight? Did anyone get any TV shows for Christmas that they plan to watch in this Challenge? I took advantage of my Amazon gift card to buy digital copies of Blue Planet II, since I had to let my Netflix lapse. I also bought The Life Of Birds, and some episodes of the National Geographic Animal Collection. I also have some TV shows coming as a prize in the Comedy Challenge. If anyone wants to, feel free to start at anytime after midnight tonight.

Re: TV on DVD* The Ninth Season Discussion Thread

After being absent for the past 3 years, I'm back to do this challenge again! My last challenge was the 2015 one. I'm not sure how much I will be viewing but it's just nice to do this again.

Is there a checklist that we can use or can we use the previous ones for the challenge?

I don't really have a goal this year but I'll continue with the one from 2015 which was that I started Mazinger Z but have yet to finish it. I did finish Psych but I have yet to watch the 2018 movie.

Edtheripper
I took your previous years table and used it in my list too. I hope that you don't mind...

I don’t think there is a checklist on this Challenge.

Today is the perfect day for vegging in front of the TV at my house today. Too cold to do anything outside. I’m already in my bed with one of my dogs cuddling up with me for a day of watching TV.

I just finished my first double credit viewing of the Challenge. Sling TV has Nat Geo Wild available with on demand programs, so I decided to watch an episode of The Incredible Dr. Pol. I thought, since the Holiday Challenge was going on, I’d watch a Christmas episode.

Re: TV on DVD* The Ninth Season Discussion Thread

I watched some baseball yesterday and I honestly think it was warmer here yesterday than it was during the games I was watching. I wonder if Joe Buck has gotten any better at disguising his disdain for certain teams. You could tell that he was not happy the White Sox were in the World Series.

Orlando Hernadez' pitching in Game 3 of the ALDS doesn't get enough credit. One-run game and he comes in with the bases loaded and no outs. He gets all three batters.

Re: TV on DVD* The Ninth Season Discussion Thread

I’ve been chipping away at Dogfights since even before the Challenge, and am approaching the end of Season 2. I just finished a Vietnam episode that was a little different. It was about the F-4 Phantoms of the USS Midway. One thing that made this episode a little different was the battle with a pair of MiG 19s. Most pilots flew against the MiG 17. Ar the end of the episode, there was kind of a postscript about the Midway herself, and how when she retired after Desert Storm, instead of being scrapped, she was put on display in the museum at San Francisco.
