Re: The 14th Annual DVDTalk Holiday Challenge (11/17 - 1/1)
The radio station I listen to began playing Christmas music on Tuesday, so I have really been in a holiday mood lately. I wanted to hold off until the Challenge began before I watched anything though.
I kicked it off with my traditional Thanksgiving viewing, which I use a wild card for, since it's not actually about Thanksgiving. I always watch the 'My Life As A Turkey' episode of Nature, which is available on Amazon Prime. It's all about a man who raises a brood of wild turkeys and quite literally becomes one of them.

Well I'm starting with Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Letting it play while I do a little morning cleaning.

Last year I was a little crazy and did my ~40 item personal checklist twice for this Challenge; once for the November portion and once for December. I’m trying to avoid that this year. I’ll watch some holiday content this month, but will try to keep it all comedy-compliant until December 1st.

I seem to be having an equipment failure. I think the HDMI port is starting to go on my Roku. I have to fiddle with the cord when I hook it up. It’s not the cable, because it works fine on my PlayStation and Xbox.

You're only supposed to have equipment failure during the Horror Challenge! My region free player decided to stop playing DVDs that month. BR play fine - it just won't load a DVD.

For those who love horror, there's a new Thanksgiving themed horror movie on Hulu. I haven't watched it yet so I don't know how good it is, but I hope to watch it in the next day or two.
INTO THE DARK: FLESH & BLOOD

They seem to be doing holiday-themed movies, so I bet there'll be a Christmas one too. Really looking forward to the new Christmas horror movies this year. I think I've seen all the older ones. Last year's "Better Watch Out" was a highlight of last year's holiday challenge.

It’s basically an ever growing list to make sure I “satisfy” every subscription plan and collection niche. If I watch at least one item from each thing I spend money on, it helps me feel like I’m getting my money’s worth out of it. My full list is way too long at like 40 items now, but you can see how it could work for anyone from something like the following list:
Thanks! Always on the look-out for new holiday horror. Hmm, maybe that should be a monthly checklist item....
I’m conflicted on Better Watch Out. It was good, loved the acting and the “hook”, but felt like it was much more vulgar than necessary.
- Amazon Prime
- Blu-ray Digibook
- Criterion
- Disney
- Netflix
- Shudder

I watched "Into the Dark: Flesh & Blood". It was decent. An agoraphobic teen who lives alone with her dad after her mom's unsolved murder begins to suspect him. It was very small in scale, being set entirely in the house with only a few actors, but it was well done and tense.

I was watching AMC this morning, and saw a commercial showing that their holiday schedule starts on the 26th.

I don't what I would even call the movie. An Invasion Horror Comedy? I discovered it last year and had a lot of fun with it. I'm slow to get started this year, but I hope I can at least get some thanksgiving viewing in between now and Thursday.

I just got back from seeing The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. While I wouldn't say the plot is great, it was a fun film to watch. It was beautiful to watch. The costumes and the background both were amazing. I don't know that this is going to become an annual holiday watch for me, but I'm glad I saw it.

I couldn't tell you for sure, but I suspect not as much as people who love the ballet would want. I think it's pretty prominent in 3 or 4 scenes and more background music for the rest. There are 2 scenes with actual ballet in them, one major, one just for a few seconds.
Hope that helps!

For the first time in years, I actually missed the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade today. I had it on, but fell asleep soon after it started, and didn’t wake up till the dog show was on, when I was woke up for Thanksgiving Dinner.

One of the shows I watch every year around Thanksgiving is The Mouse On The Mayflower , which is available on YouTube. I noticed something today that I guess I never paid attention to before. Paul Frees was one of the voice actors. If I remember correctly, he played the voice of KARR in the third season Knight Rider episode, ‘KITT vs KARR’.

Well I don't think I can go for the win this year, but I do hope I can watch 75-100 this year. Say what you want about Roseanne now, but I always enjoyed her show and she had some good holiday episodes.

That makes for a good question. What TV show has had the best holiday episodes?

In terms of consistently good shows I'll go with American Dad.

I'm partial to the ones on The Bob Newhart Show.
For Halloween episodes only, it's Roseanne.

I don't know, while I agree Roseanne had good Halloween episodes, I was always partial to the Thanksgiving ones. 1) Shelley Winters. 2) reminds me of my own family holidays.
